I cannot find medical justification for cropping a dog's pinnas. So the choice to crop a dog's ears is a personal decision that a purebred dog owner needs to weigh carefully... partly because what you think you will get may not occur. I refer to the disappointing cases where the pup's ears have been cropped and yet, no matter what everyone tries to do, the ears won't stand erect!
Many veterinarians have to charge well over $150 per pup due to the anesthetic, surgery, bandages, hospital stay, and also will charge for rebandaging, suture removal, antibiotics, etc.

Why do you want to crop your APBT's ears, by the way? Most veterinarians will not perform this procedure on puppies over 14 weeks of age because as the pup ages, his ear cartilage becomes less pliant and the potential for non-erect ears increases.

Most Vets will clip Pit Bull ears, like they do Doberman ears, boxer ears etc. However if you want you Pit Bull's ears "clipped" or actually cut off so there isn't any ear left, I know no Vet's that would do that. As far as I am concerned, the only reason you;d like your pit bull to have NO ears is to fight him and the other dogs can't grab their ears. Not a good reason. You should already have a Vet for your dog, getting shot and deworming, what did he say? Pit Bulls can be such nice dogs if they are socialized with other dogs and treated with respect. If you want you pit bull ears basically taken off, you want to fight him and I don't agree with what you're trying to do. It's cruel and your dog will be injured so bad that he'll have to be PTS sooner or later. That is no way to treat a pet.

You shouldn't clip its ears! You'll make it look mean! I love pitbulls! Great choice for breed but bad choice for ears.

If you simply must get his ears clipped, go to a professional...your vet. Do NOT do this at home. In my home town, a man was recently jailed for clipping his Pit's ears at home. Animal cruelty was the charge.
This is a serious operation, requiring anesthesia, stitches, anti-biotics and follow-up medical care.

In about 1990, I had the ears cropped on a wonderful Doberman, that my daighter was going to show..She was the pick of a fine litter of nine, and was the sweetest, smartest little girl...By the time her ears were cropped, dressed daily and cleaned and dressed some more (seemed like a forever job!) she became less and less sweet. She became untrusting, un-affectionate, stubborn, disobedient, and never was again the sweet, loving little girl.. She had lost her trust in us...She looked to us to love her and take care of her, and just look what we did to the poor baby..She finally became so aggressive that she had to be put down...That is when I stopped breeding Dobermans..I just couldn't stand the thought of doing that to another sweet puppy..
that doesn't happen to all Dobies, or other breeds that are tradionally cropped..but it sure happned to that one...

Please do not do this. You do not HAVE to do this. It is an old trend, and really, only show dogs should have cropped ears.
It is a painful procedure and SHOULD be considered cruel.
Your dog's ears will be fine without cropping.
I sure hope you did not just get an APBT because they are considered bully breeds and that getting the ears cropped makes them look "tough"!!!!
Oh, and pitbull is not a breed....it is called an American Pit Bull Terrier.
I swear, some people should not even be allowed to have dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The term is cropping.
Your puppy needs to between eight weeks and fourteen weeks in age to be done. No older - even if a vet will do it. It is much harder to get them to stand correctly if done any later in age.
A licensed and experienced vet who does the cosmetic surgery will be able to perform this. When/if you decide to have it done, remember to seek out good quality photographs of crops you like.
You can also ask on various APBT forums for vet recommendations in your area that do it properly and correctly.
Two forums I recommend for this question are:

www.purebredpuppy.com

You can go to your vet. But, why put your beloved pet through a very long and painful process (they are cutting off part of the ear how would you like it!) Pitts look so much sweeter with floppy ears have a heart!

If you really feel that it needs to be done, you will have to call your or a local vet and ask if they will do it (it is called cropping). It tend to be very painful for the dog and expensive for the owner. Plus, why would you want to make a breed that people already think is mean and make it look meaner?
