why not let kids enjoy their innocence and allow them to decide if religion is for them when they reach adulthood? Is it because then that the atheism numbers will grow higher?

Its amusing isnt it that that the religious types accuse atheists of wanting a form of brain washing for their children which is just as insidious and yet all the question said was that children should be allowed to enjoy their innocence and think for themselves.

One person said it was horrible to tell kids about evolution and make them think there was nothing better than this life. Maybe it would be horrible to tell a child his grandmother died on his 10th birthday - but that wouldnt stop her being dead, would it? Religious people need to think are you really believing something likely to be true or just something you want to be true.

I'm an atheist but I'm not going to 'brainwash' my kids. I'll teach them HOW to think, not WHAT to think. If I teach them that christianity, sikhism, hinduism are all religions incompatibly claiming to be the one true faith I hope he'd draw his own conclusions.

All parents instill their values in their children whether they are religious or not.Why is it when a religious person does it it is called brainwashing.
Children are bombarded everyday by various factions trying to direct their thinking,so why is it wrong for parents to endeavour to build an appreciation for what they believe will be a benefit to them.
Just because a parent shares their belief with a child does not mean that they are removing choice from them,in fact it is giving them a choice which the rest of the world would probably not encourage.
Why on earth do you think that the secular world in which we live is going to PROTECT the child's innocence is beyond me.

^ isabella f Is evolution a fact or a theory? It can't be both.Even scientists admit that the pictures we see of hairy ape men are from imagination and NOT based on firm evidence.
Question: If the ape is our closest relative,Why do they use pigs organs for transplant and not apes?

If evolution is a fact why is there so much disagreement among scientists?

I am an atheist, but I understand that parents who have certain beliefs would like them passed on. I would like my lack of faith, and belief in mankind, passed on, but at present my daughter is at a catholic school - why? - becauee it's the best education she can get in our neighbourhood. She is getting th best out of an imperfect world. I only see a problem with fundamentalism, where religion - Islam, Christian, or whatever - is taught as a weapen of hate to use against the whole world. My daughter comes home each day full of "christian love" etc, which is actually very humanist in essence. She is not being taught that non-believers should be killed, or that the country should be run by priests.

I live in a practically atheist state - Great Britain. History will eventually see the death of "in your face" religious practices, but for the present, as long as my right not to believe is respected,
I am happy with that .

Loking at some of these answers as well as the question I believe it is the method of thinking and reasoning that is important to teach the young. Denying a child access to religious beleifs or forcing those beliefs on them are equally dangerous. Surely an open mind and strong morality are more important to pass on to the young without either we would raise a generation of apathetic individuals, potential criminals, naive clones or cynical adults.

Hey you.... That isn't neccessarily correct though i understand yuor point some one who is raised in an environment of violence will not always grow up to be violent themselves ( i know this from personal experience) though i guess the chance they would is greatly increased if that is all they ever know.

I totally agree with you. I come from a Catholic family, but never had religion pushed onto me. I am totally open minded when coming to religion and because I was not brainwashed into religion I have found a religion that suits me(did spend most of my life been atheist.)
I now have a son of my own and although I feel the religion I have chosen for myself is the right path, I do not force it onto my son, It's up to him what he chooses to believe in.

Religion runs a distant second to the power of brainwashing of popular culture.

A proper exposure to God and religion can help to counteract the real brainwashing that popular culture is constantly throwing at all of us in books, movies, TV, songs, advertisements, and even video games.

Popular culture is constantly bombarding us with intensive, not-so-forcible indoctrination, aimed at setting up worldly convictions and attitudes.

Popular culture comes at us from all directions including books, movies, TV, songs, advertisements, video games and even the Internet.

A few of the these immoral values include:
- Lust and Sex (outside of marriage)
- A disrespect for God and religion
- A disrespect for lawful authority
- A disrespect for our human dignity
- Envy, greed and consumerism
- Anger and Violence
- Drugs including smoking and alcohol
- Vanity, outside is more important than inside
- Prejudice and hate

I think that if we expose our children to all this immorality without the moral anchor of God and religion "until they can come to a conclusion of their own" then we would be unwise, irresponsible, and frequently too late.

With love in Christ.

It grew to become into stable, yet i'm a splash puzzled... if you are going to a Catholic college... then why are you an atheist? additionally, did you already know that it grew to become into the dark a while because of the fact Christ's Church grew to become into not upon the earth? all of us grew to become into puzzled approximately faith. I additionally would not call coaching babies to be greater Christlike brainwashing. that's unhappy that maximum of people are leaving at the back of the ideals taught to them from the variety of youthful age. while else are we meant to coach this? To adults who might in all probability choose for "technology" over faith in any case? Christianity could in uncomplicated terms be pulling the international down because of the fact maximum of Christians take too plenty time attempting to coach that they are good. Christianity could desire to lift the international up no count if it quite is coaching maximum of stable doctrines. i don't think of you have a superb variety of your information good the two, sorry... If something, technology proves are outstanding God quite is in becoming all issues. It would not disprove Him.

My husband and I have talked about this in detail. We've decided that any children we have won't be brought up inside a religion. Instead, they will be taught about all religions from as unbiased sources as we can find. And then they will be allowed to make their own choice on what religion they feel is best for them.

In that event, they will not be baptised or have a wiccaning because those would not be by their own will but by ours and naturally make them biased towards those religions.

I LOVE THE WAY I WAS BROUGHT UP

I believe that God is good like my dad and my grandmother and they told me God was good and most of my information was straight from the bible.

Then by age 27, I had been in religion and my bible made no sense.
I chose the bible and continued to read it and discard religious beliefs and except the bible as the word of God.
The bible is all about who was here before us and what happened to them and in the world there is not anything about it that is not serious. It is not so good what can happen.
It all comes out to be that we will have salvation in time. John 3:16;

Well I suppose that allowing them to decide on their own is wise....children frequently make wise mature decisions..*snicker*

Wouldn't raising them with no faith be brainwashing them that there is none? Or that all the religeons are all true? We all have a bias and raise our children as best we can.
But let me add, no matter how you raise your children, it doesn't guarantee that they will keep their beliefs when they grow up. Raising them with moral values and a christian foundation does do one thing though, it lives up to my responsibilities as a christian parent. It is my responsibility to teach my children who God is and how to relate to them. If I believe in the Bible, and I do, then why WOULDN'T I want to tell them about God. We all teach our children what we believe to be true. To ask any less of a parent is irresponsible.
