I totally agree with you . I live in florida and I also volunteer at a shelter and i do rescue and I foster . And yes breeders are out of control . I am so sick of hearing about ppls designer dogs . designer dogs are mutts ,mixed breeds that you paid 450 or better for . Please reconsider and have your dog altered . It is not cruel and it will be better for the dog . I do not think ppl will ever learn inthis country to do this . I totally agree with you . good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

I have no problem with people breeding dogs. People that have put in countless hours researching every conceivable topic on the subject. People that have fully contemplated every possible ethical situation involving breeding and rescue. People that have spent numerous hours at animal shelters and possibly even volunteered their time. People that will be dedicated to breeding the best of the breed (by health and temperment.) People that will be dedicated to the wellbeing of their dogs, its puppies, and if the case exists, their puppies.
Generally the people asking questions about breeding in YA won't fall into that category.
I wouldn't assume that every person asking a question in here though has the intent to breed. I'm sure some of them are just curious about the subject. Maybe they know someone who has a pregnant pet. Perhaps a neighbor. You can't blame someone for wanting to be educated. Maybe mommy and daddy won't explain to missy where puppies come from. Maybe asking here is safer than asking peers at school? (Sorry, I have a thing for playing "devil's advocate." So many times we're quick to presume something only to find out we were totally wrong.)

When we give the government control over everything some people think is bad where do you suppose it will end. Since the world is overcrowded and we (the human race) are using up all the natural resources should we begin mandatory hysterectomies and/or vasectomies to control population and to perserve some of our natural resourses, you know less people less need for food, clothing, shelter, etc.... As a matter of fact since people are after all at fault for breeding all these animals why not just take away every ones right/ privilege to own an animal, you know for our own good and the good of the animals, this way no one will be able to breed.
Another thing for your info, did you know that a lot of licensed breeders/kennels are nothing more then a puppymill that has permission by the state of operation to breed for greed. I know because I learned the hard way, first 2 shepherds I bought were from a kennel that was licensed by the state and I thought well it is licensed it must be okay.Yeah right!!! Two people ran the kennel of 128 dogs(this number did not include the puppies she had for sale) but I guess it was alright she was after all licensed by the state. Let me forget the fact that the 2 dogs I bought from her were both euthanized before the age of 3 despite proper feeding and vet care and neutering!!They were sick with genetic problems that could have been prevented if the "licensed breeder" had given a sh*t about the dogs and not just about the money. I paid big money to the "licensed breeder with full breeds" for the 2 dogs and they should not have been sick due to her negligence, but all the state does is come out 1 or 2x a year to check the facilities and the records which could be false. They also collect their fees, they do not do much else.
I show my dog in conformation so it is not out of ignorance that my dog is not altered but b/c of ignorance such as yours someday I may not be able to show in conformation(you can not show an altered dog) because there may be laws such as the one you are proposing as well as breed banning. FYI not all that have dogs that are not altered are abusing and breeding indiscriminately, but lets just punish all for the good of the animals. So I guess when the government is making every decision for you, you will feel very good because no need to think for yourself anymore.
The way to combat the problem is to continue educating the public and pushing people to spay and neuter.
EDIT: one other thing that is wrong with your proposal and that is not all who own pure bred males and females even if they are registered should be breeding their dogs because not all are breed quality. Hopefully no one like you ever gets to decide what animals are breed quality, because who knows what kind of animals we will end up with, considering you only want us to allow the licensed breeders to reproduce their animals. I guess you forgot about all the dog enthusiast that breed for the love of the breed so they ensure the dogs stay as close to the standard as possible. What you propose takes the ethical breeders out of the picture because they would not be able to afford the fees associated with licensing or the fees for have un altered dogs(as you suggested). All that will be left are the crap dogs that end up in the shelters now because of temperament problems, health issues, etc....

Had to be one of those right-winged activists... I euthanize dogs on a daily basis due to my job. Just because the owners of some animals are careless (letting pets run free, the so called back yard breeders, and puppy mills, etc.) does that mean we punish the animals also? Not sure where you are from but in Texas, any adoption made from a shelter, impoundment facility, etc., is required by law to have the animal spayed/neutered.
Now according to your figure, 2009 dogs are euthanized a day. How many of those were turned in by their owners?, How many were cruelty cases? How many were unfit for adoption?
How many were euthanized solely because they were not spayed/neutered? None.
Lets take this a step further... One could say that the human race is growing out of control. Do we start sterilizing humans now too?

I do comprehend what you assert and that i in my view attempt to be sluggish to criticize or assume i understand human beings's motives. I even tend to enable emotions get interior the way while human beings say they have enable their dogs get pregnant, because of the fact i'm interior the shelters oftentimes and all the dogs that deserve residences yet will proceed to be there or be euthanized purely breaks my heart. the significant's that there are purely too many homeless animals in shelters. for each dogs I undertake from the shield, there is yet another guy or woman accessible bringing 5+ puppies into the international....and that i will basically undertake a brilliant number of! until we've very almost 0 animals in those shelters, i'm hoping human beings think of two times in the previous breeding their very own dogs.

I kind of agree, but I can't help but notice that you have a registered purebred yourself, and you mentioned nothing about puppy mills (which in my opinion are the absolute worst). I have two french bulldogs that are show dogs (both finished AKC and APRI conformation champions, and currently working on their CGC and TDI certification). I also have 2 rescues, both of which were abused and starved almost to death before I got them. I work very closely with my local shelter and rescues, and I have found homes for over 50 dogs this year. I understand and agree about the backyard breeders, puppy mills, and intentional cross breeders (and also about some of the people that ask question here), but I feel that you are lumping the extremely responsible breeders with those that are extremely irresponsible. You need to be just complaining about the people that breed to make money, not the people that breed because they are trying to better the breed.
Also, AKC makes it so you can sell your puppies on limited registration, so that the puppies of the dog cannot be registered.

Not all breeders are bad. I breed my Miniature Pinschers to better the breed. My puppies are always sold before they are even born, and not one of them have ended up in shelters. My puppies are sold around the country because of the quality of their coats and their excellent health. All of my pets are vet checked before breeding and after to ensure they are healthy. They are checked thoroughly for any genetic diseases and are not bred if any are found.
All of my puppies are sold on spay/neuter contracts to ensure they are not sold to $ breeders. My puppies have been championed in shows and agility contests and more importantly, they have become lifelong companions to their owners.
You are making your opinion on breeding and "breeders" from a lot of facts that make up such a small part of the breeding community. I agree that irresponsible breeders should be punished, but responsible breeders should be praised for their work in bettering the breed, making the breed healthier, happier, better quality animals.
Puppy mills and pet store breeders make responsible breeders like me look bad. I believe there are a lot of breeders out there taking advantage of the money to be made, especially with small dogs, but I don't agree that all breeders are bad and that people should be banned from breeding their dogs. If all breeders took more time to really think about improving the quality of the pets they are producing we wouldn't have as many strays and homeless pets as we do.
It isn't the breeders that are making stray pets, it is irresponsible pet owners that don't want to put forth the time, money, and effort it takes to train their pets. I fostered for an animal shelter for a lot of years and the # one reason people abandoned their pets was lack of training. That is the pet owners fault, not the breeders.

It is a very sad thing. I like to spread the word about petfinder.com because it is advertisement for rescues to find homes for pet. They even have rescued puppies and kittens available. Promote petfinder not irresponsible breeders!

For those who want to do the math:
