Your question is not dumb at all. You are very smart to think like that. If you are dumb you won't be able to think that way. You just haven't read or met somebody who can explain it to you clearly.
O.K. Let's go to the Bible and see what the Bible says.
In Genesis 7:11,12
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.
We can read in the beginning how God separate the water in the sky and the water on the earth. Genesis 1:7,8.
Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
We all know that in the sky, the clouds are actually like floating ocean. The vapor from the earth are gathered in the clouds, and when the temperature drops as it soar above the mountains, the water in the clouds drop down to the face of the earth.
We also know that there is body of water under the surface of the ground. That's why when we dig deep enough, we will get wells of water.
During the flood, for forty days and forty night, the power of God was demonstrated in making the water from the deep in the ground burst up, while the water in the clouds were poured down.
The Chinese character for water is very interesting.
Look at this character for "flood"[hong] æ´ª, which consists of the component "water"[san dian shui] on the left , meaning two drops of water coming down from ebove and one line which indicate the third drop of water going up, or bursting from the ground. Which is an amazing description of the account of the flood in the book of Genesis chapter 7:11,12. Next to the water ius the component indicating "double tens" and beneath it is the dividing line or horizon, and beneath the dividing line is number "8". In the ancient writing found on the oracle bones, it was very dramatically pictured as "hands" lifted up above water surface, and the earth covered with water, and undeneath the earth is the number "8". Experts in ancient Chinese characters have explained it very logically, that those ancient Chinese ancestors were describing the very thing mentioned in Genesis 7:11, 12. How can water go up? Well, the only time it happens is during the flood, when the fountains of the deep burst, and from above the clouds in heaven poured it loads.
Now the question, where did the water drain?
Genesis 8:1-5 gives us a very clear description of how the water was on the face of the earth for 150 days after the rain stopped, and during those 150 days, a part of it sipped back down into the earth, while the rest is blown by winds to and fro and of course the sun did its work in evaporating it, that after 300 days, the mountain tops appeared and then the land also appeared.
Again the water are divided into two part, the vapor on the clouds, and the water on the oceans, lakes, rivers, and also beneath the ground.
1 Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained. 3 And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. 4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.
That is no fable, but as scientific as any can be explained.

The water is still there,if all the earth would be leveled everywhere, water would cover the whole face by several hundred feet, lucky for us it's not,dry land exsists because under the ocean there are canyons deeper then our tallest mountains and take most of the water, besides that, the poles contain enough frozen water, that if they ever melt,we'll be wet all the way to our ears.
My mention of a level world was merely to point out there is enough water to cover the earth, the bible mentions 40 days and nights of rain, that moisture has to come from someplace, the oceans are the only logical places,at that time, the new world which is now america was unknown, which means whoever wrote or pass on the story of the flood considered that part of the world as the only world period,so if there was really a flood that covered everything,it was probably only restricted to that part of the world but whoever wrote about it thought it was everywhere.

Magic. That's the only possible explanation. It couldn't have just evaporated; it would have come down again as rain very shortly thereafter. If couldn't have formed polar caps so quickly; those things take a little longer than 40 days to reform. It couldn't have simply disappeared into the Earth; again, it would take much longer than 40 days for the amount of water that would have been necessary to flood the entire Earth to sink down into the water table or into aquifers beneath the surface of the Earth. The only explanation is that God created it out of thin air and then made it disappear again.
Either that or else the whole "world flood" theory is just a huge myth.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. You all should know the routine by now.

The story of the great flood is a myth.
There is no source of sufficient water to produce a world-wide flood that covered the highest mountains. Even if it did happen, there is no place to which the flood waters could subside. Genesis was written over an interval of many centuries by at least five author/editors. The universal flood story was derived from an earlier Babylonian myth by two of these authors. The Genesis flood myth is obviously based on an earlier Babylonian myth; there are many correspondences between the two legends.

The flood is actually an historical event. Geologists have found evidence for it.
However, it did not cover the entire world, but great regions of the Middle-East, about 6 000 years ago - or just about the time texts that would come to form Genesis were written. So the earth was not entirely engulfed, but there were unprecedented floods which, to the people who lived in those regions, might as well have been on the entire planet, since that region was all they knew.

Prior to the flood the world did not have rain. It was irrigated from the ground. Our atmosphere was also made of water at that time, which created a sort of hyperbaric chamber in the earth. This atmosphere, by theory would have let reptiles grow without limitation and humans live much much longer. Anyway, not the answer you were looking for, but an intersting theory from Dr. Dino. You should look it up.
The water evaporated and became what we know as rain. Some created oceans, ice bergs, etc. It' still around changing from form to form constantly.

Hello Betty! The Hebrew story of the flood was not the original version (I know, I know). The Jews were captured by the Babylonians in 575 BC (the diaspora) and taken back to Babylon (present day Iraq) and force fed the Babylonian faith, which included the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Jewish priests then wrote the book of Genesis to contradict the pagan story with their own version of creation and the flood. People don't want to hear that, but that is the historical truth that all biblical scholars adhere too. Genesis was never written to be taken literally. I don't know why so many people of faith can't accept the truth which broadens the Hebrew faith as originally intended.

Into the oceans. Some believe the world before the flood was very different. The bible says it didnt' even rain but the plantlife would be watered by a mist that came down. That the oceans weren't there like they are now. I'm not completely sure. The bible also says that after the flood that the mountains were lifted up. Such a catastrophic even would surely create global instability. All I know is that there sure is alot of water on it now.

Before the flood (around 30,000 BC for those who think that the Bible included every little unimportant year) the water was mostly suspended in the upper atmosphere, there was no Mediteranean Sea, and the levels of the Atlantic and Pacific were much lower. Having most of Earth's water in the atmosphere filtered sunlight to the extent that everyone aged far slower, and many of the constants involved in the sciences of geology and radio-carbon dating were different.....

World wide flood is describing a big tsunami.
Water covering mountain tops is describing some local flooding of hills.
I suppose the water went back into the sea.
The ancients had a tendency to exaggerate somewhat.
