everyone has their own favorite authors, but there are several general collections that are avail for sale in the lakeshore catalog but its much more fun to create your own.
for early/beginning readers(and please do not rush your child into reading before he/she is ready) they will learn much more rapidly if you or another adult reads to them on a regular basis
my own personal favorites include but do not exclude almost any author who may be entertaining to a particular child.....eric carle, dr seuss, tana hoban, margaret brown, stan/jan berainstein, r a rey, e b white, richard scarry, richard dahl, all of the traditional fairy tales/fables, author of danny and the dinosaur, ....cant remember any more check out your local library and remember to include a variety of subject(math, science, social studies, families, health, etc) and be sure to include not only picture books but books that your child can follow along with while you read to them and most of all be sure your child both sees you read but has a variety of reading material including newspapers, magazines, books, audio books, coupons, etc to practice reading from.
I actually taught one of my own children to read by practicing reading the bus stop benches and shelters(we rode the bus to and from work/school and home)
and HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

Fantastic! The best way to make a reader is to read to them. Mine loved "The Monster at the End of This Book" (featuring Cookie Monster) Also, Barnes and Noble carries some Disney hard-bound anthologies that have dozens of the most popular Disney stories in them. Great length for bedtime reading, and while each book is around $15, you'd spend much, much more by purchasing that many separate books.
