It sounds like an external hemmorhoid. If it has gotten smaller, and is not painful or bleeding, the ointment is a good thing. It is not likely to actually disappear forever without minor surgery, freezing, or other treatment, but it is not worth worrying about if the doctor is monitoring it.

Pain at passing stools, slight bleeding in the case of internal trouble, and feeling of soreness and irritation after passing a stool are the usual symptoms of piles. The patient cannot sit comfortably due to itching , discomfory, and pain in the rectal region.

Pregnancy is also associated with hemorrhoids. These conditions lead to increased pressure within the hemorrhoidal veins that causes them to swell. Other conditions, for example chronic liver disease, may also cause increased venous pressure and may be associated with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are very common and are estimated to occur in up to one-half of the population by age 50.

This probably is hemorrhoids but why not have her call the doc and ask his nurse what the diagnosis was. The doc should have told her what the diagnosis was and if he didn't she should have asked before she left the office. Tell you mom never to leave the docs office without clear cut instructions on how to use what ever medications they prescribe and to know WHAT THEY ARE FOR.
