"DaimlerChrysler discontinued the Neon, with the final cars assembled on September 23, 2005 at the Belvidere Assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois. [2] The Dodge Neon was replaced in the spring of 2006 with the 2007 Dodge Caliber, which is based on the shared Chrysler/Mitsubishi Motors GS platform. Like the Neon, the Caliber will have a turbocharged SRT-4 variant making 300 hp. The Belvidere plant underwent retooling for the Caliber, Jeep Compass and Patriot.
Neon sales continued on throughout the first half of 2006 at many dealerships throughout North America in order to clear out remaining inventory. Because production ended in late September 2005, limited numbers of Neons were sold as 2006 models. Little advertising was given towards the Neon as focus shifted from it to the Caliber."

My sister in-law has a 2004 Neon with a 170k on it she has replaced everything on, it including the transmission. Even though she had the timing belt and water pump replaced on schedule, the valve cam cracked. She found that the cost of swapping in a rebuilt engine was comparible to the cost of just replacing the cam. She opted to get the rebuilt engine instead of scraping the car. I feel bad for her. I always thought the Neon's and Omni's were lemons but I have other in-laws that only buy Dodge products and have been getting 200k out of their Dodges with their original engines and transmissions. I have only owned Honda's since 1993 and have enjoyed stunning reliability. If my in-laws want to make Dodge their favorite brand, through the decades, I respect that. I had a Dodge Omni when I was in my 20s. I worked on it constantly. I even had to rivet new sheet metal to the floor boards because they had rusted clear through. I left domestic brands for good in 1986. I'm poor with no credit so, I only buy Hondas. ;-)

Good luck with that. I had a Dodge Neon for my first car. It was a 98, and it was a horrible car. Make sure you get all your maintenance done on it. Make sure you get your oil changes on time. If there are problems when you take it in for the oil changes, fix it right away. My Neon failed me a lot. It left me stranded on a highway off ramp. It left me stranded at work (thank god I work at a car dealership). I got it fixed after it stranded me at work, drove it home, and it wouldn't start. The air conditioning crapped out on me. It only had 120,000 miles on it. Needless to say it was a bad car, but honestly I still loved it. It's a good car to get you through your first few months. As long as you take care of it and do regular maintenance in it, you'll be ok. Just be careful and don't get behind on anything. I bought mine April of 2009 for $900, and sold it November of 2009 for $500. It's hard to say how long yours will last. The guy who had it before me had it for 6 years and it never failed him (my sister's husband). So it depends on the individual car, take care of it and when it craps out on you, don't sweat it because honestly, they really weren't made to last.
