Damn family... I guess that's what I get for having my baby names picked out years in advance, gave my family a chance to ues them!!
The names were Ethan and Alana. My brother and sister thought they were so good they used them... thinking I wasn't going to be having any kids myself... so 3 1/2 months to go and I need a name for the little sod.
The mother won't be helping with the naming either so I have to get this right... Case of right result wrong mother...
Help me people.

Thanks for the suggestions about a book I have the newest 25001 best baby names book, I'm looking for suggestions because my mind is so scrambled after loosing the names I had picked out for 10 years I can't really focus on what I should use... I mean it's like the first big thing as the poor little sod has to live with my decision for at least 16 years.

I don't know where you're from but you would want to take your own culture into account. I'm thinking purely from a white British viewpoint, as I'm not too familiar with names from other cultures. There is a lot of crossover now though, which gives you more options.

Names are a tricky business. Remember your child will have to live with her/his name all their life so avoid the weird and the unspellable unless you're determined. (10 years ago I came across siblings Michigan and Seattle; around the same time there was publicity about child models (siblings again) called Mercedes, Bentley and Saab. Now Mercedes is a German name and Bentley isn't bad but Saab? What did his parents have against him?)

At the same time don't go for the most popular names; in five years time schools will be full of Jacks (a nice name though). Fashion in girls’ names especially can change very quickly and date people. Raquel was big in the 60's so you're unlikely to meet one under the age of 40 now. Unusual spellings of common names can be in problem in later life (Kevan should have been Kevin but his father forgot the spelling. Kevan has spent all his life correcting people, including the departmental IT who got it wrong for his email address).

It's worth going for a name that will give your child a few choices for abbreviations; William went from Billy to Bill to Willum to Will as he grew up. A middle name is a good fall back too.

My personal favourites are Louisa, Lara and Katrina (the traditional spelling is Catriona but that confuses the English) Alexander (can be shortened to Alex, Alec, Al and Sandy), Stephen and Paul. I've always like Doris too (she was a Greek sea nymph) but it feels too elderly to me now.

I hope you find a good name and everything goes well. Congratulations

Well, I am currently pregnant and having a girl, we plan to name her Bella. I think it is a very pretty name. I think for girls a pretty name is good. We also really liked Savannah. For a boy Kyle, Samuel (Sammy), I have always liked Mathew. I think that it depends on what you like. Do you want a popular name or common name. Or something a little different. I have a son named Brandon and everywhere we go there is always another Brandon. In every class he has at school, on all his soccer teams etc. So with that being said We are not naming our girl Isabella because so many girls are being named that. So we are going for just Bella. Oh another cute name is Liam for a boy. Good luck and no matter what I am sure you will name your child something great!

Love the idea of bringing back traditional names:

Edith or Meredith (Edie), Iris and Mabel are all pretty, classy and underused for girls

am stuck for boys names though, but i have another 7 months to figure some out :-) Like the sound of Ethan though..Cheers!!

You could buy a baby name book or search online. Just google or yahoo baby names and tons of sites pop up.

I like the old fashioned names for girls... Examples are Emily,
Meghan, Ashley, Abbigale, Madison, Madeline, Lauren, Brianne or Brianna, Samantha, Hannah.

For boys, I like names like Jonathan, Christian, David, Ryan,
Gregory, Timothy, Thomas, Joshua, Jake, Julian, Elijah, etc.

Good luck! And Congratulations!

Friend of mine used a well known book to help name her child - The Bible. You'll be surprised some of the names can be used in this day and age; your child will not be ridiculed if pick right but good luck with whichever name you eventually pick.

I know what you mean. Jacob was my favorite boy name for the last 14 yrs. and then all of the sudden it was the #1 name and overused. Well, there that went. Here are some boy names that my husband and I like.

Benjamin, Aiden, Elliott, Elijah, John, Luke, Matthew, Paul, Peter...
