Because I assumed that he was mentally disabled.
Basically, this menatlly disabled fellow usually comes down on my property and rips back and forth on his dirtbike right in front of my house. I usually go up and confront him in a nice way to leave (becaus he is sensitive and cries) and then he leaves.
However, today I saw the same red dirtbike (or so I thought) ripping back and forth. I conronted him, thinking that he was the mentally disabled guy. So, trying to make him understand in simple terms why it bugged me so much, I made "VRRRROOOM VROOOOM" noises to him and spoke to him as though he was mentally disabled. He then got VERY offended and asked me if I thought he was a retard. I honestly thought he was....but I told him "no, but if you were, there is nothing wrong with that". I was kindof embarrassed, but he was definately pissed at that point. I told him I would call the cops if he came back. Do you think I should be worried that he will come back and kill me?

Oh yah, we do have "no tresspassing" signs EVERYWHERE, which is part of the reason I thought he might be a little slow.
And the cops are worthless!

Yes. I have. There was a guy in his 20s on who use to hang around Central railway station in the 90s. Unfortunately time was not on his side. As he got older he was not as attractive to the closet bisexuals who frequent public places. As homosexuality is in about 10% of the population it will be in all people. I also know of a handicapped man who gets on trains and he will masturbate. So now we know that there are mentally disable people who are into a gay time and some into self service. Are you aware that homosexual behaviour is identified in many animals and some insects. Only one animal has a problem with it. Have a guess which animal that is? That makes it a natural behaviour. Not a learned behaviour. I saw a video the other day about a fish in the Caribbean that has both male and female sex organs. They do pair, and they do swap rolls .If you were this fish you would be condemning all other animals who only have one sex as learning bad sexual behaviour. Just because its not your style does not allow you to say its a learned behaviour, in other words its not natural. What really gets up my noes is people who in the past were subjected to discrimination them self. Yet through the efforts of others they now live a better life. Are you aware that gay pride marches are not just about gays. They are about equality for all. Its just that some areas of the community have sat back and let gays take up the fight. Today the once victims of discrimination have swapped sides and are now the ones discriminating against others. Personally if that jumping ship mentality is a cost of being accepted by the community I would rather not be accepted, in my eyes it would be better to remain the victim of discrimination than join the offenders.

Apparently, this guy apparently is a "retard," unlike the fellow who is usually on your lawn. The fellow with mental disabilities probably can't recall you telling him not to ride his dirtbike on your property. However, this guy ignored the signs you've posted on your property and then is offended by the way you tell him to get off your property? No worries there whether you offended him or not. I'd go ahead and contact the police regarding the incident, that way if he does come back on to your property it can formally be criminal trespass rather than just a warning.

POST no trespassing signs and let the cops do their job if needed. It has nothing to do with how you spoke to him. It already happened and probably wasn't the first mistake you ever made in your life...get over it. Any threat must be handled by the local police......chances are he already forgot about it. If not----too bad---it's your property. Be cool and have a nice xmas

If the guy was turfing your lawn, I wouldn't give 3 seconds of thought as to how you handled it, or whether or not you offended this vandal. Of course, if he comes back and kills you, maybe you should have handled it differently.
Could it have been the same retarded guy after a miraculous drug cure? Did he look like Cliff Robertson?

Instead of worrying about him harming you, perhaps you shoudl try to focus on empathy. There are no bad words, just bad intentions. Perhaps you did not mean to offend him, but try to look at it from his perspective. How would you feel? Again, I'm not one of those PC police who try to censor everything you say, but perhaps tasting your words before you spit them out won't hurt. For example, try to use "people first language." So, instead of saying "mentally disable fellow, try "a fellow with mental disabilities." Generally try to avoid "retard." And avoid stereotyping. Just because somebody has a bike doesn't mean they have a cognitive disability.

When he asked you if you thought he was the "R" word uuggh! (sorry can't even write it, 12 years of working with the Developmentally Challenged/Differently-abled population) you had nothing left to to be embarrassed about. Frankly, he seems to have at least some emotional issues although probably near or at av. IQ level. It is best not to confront him anymore. It is best when talking to anyone especially someone with challenges to talk to them on your level not your perception of their level. Trust me I know from experience they know when they are being patronized.
