I have trained and owned many dog including German Shepperd's.
Your question can be answered this way dogs in general dominate there space, this includes both large and small breeds.
Remember if considering a dog for both a house pet and a dog for protection can lead to trouble. The reasons are simple a dog cant reason. " is the mailman a friend, the neighbor who comes over to borrow the lawn mower.Remember today insurance claims are up for dog bites. A German Shepperd is a fine breed but train the dog to accept strangers. A dog bites mostly from fear so keep your dog balanced and he will keep you out of court.

German Shepards are what the police use. They can be trained to be very protective, however they are very large dogs, so I would think very hard about getting one if you live in a small home or have kids.

They are very protective . I had an insurance sales man piss me off and I was outside with my german sheppard and she pinned him to his car untill I came and got her and he had made the mistake of raising his voice to me that was perceived as a threat by her and she in no uncertain terms let him know that ,that was unacceptable to do around her mom . good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

GS dogs are naturally protective of their territory and family. They don't need any special training, it's in their blood to be protective.
