Mark was written first, and they all seem to have used an additional source that didn't survive from antiquity. This source of Jesus life has been dubbed "Q" from the German word "Quelle" which means "source." Because of these common sources for the writing, Matthew and Luke share a lot with Mark, but they also have additional sources that were unique. John did not seem to use Matthew, Mark, Luke or Quelle as a resource for writing his Gospel.

The "synoptic" (from the Greek: "seen together") try to follow a chronology of the life of Jesus.

St. John is more concerned with reporting the glory of the Son of God and doesn't try to keep things in the order their happening.
