This depends on what you WANT to buy. There are LOTS of good programs out there that are no cost. Example: OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. Avast instead of Norton. GIMP instead of photoshop.

Now, there are GOOD applications that really have no equal like Flash...but do you want/need it?

If you are asking about which operating system, Windows XP Professional. It has the power that you need, and the ability to use more of your computer's potential than Home or Media Center editions.

I would advise you to wait about a month or two and get the new Windows Vista, which will have better options for media PCs
