Could be a lot of things.
Love – will bring the guy back, but so will sex. Great sex! But don’t rule out just being horny and looking for some and what I think the most reason is…. Is the guy is lonely and can’t find another girl so they head back to their last gf or an old ex.

The only way a guy would go back the old route would be if he found that he is not enjoying his detour on the new track.
U must be naging him. Or u havent fulfilled his expectations from u.
The only time man turns to go behind is when the journy ahead is not meaningful or is painful.

Depends on the guy...same as a woman. Some go back because they really cared for the other person...Some go back to try to "fix" something they felt like they didn't before...Maybe there's kids involved...Maybe to atone for feeling guilty about something...maybe to pay them back in some way if she had done something pivotal in their life...Sometimes just for revenge.
