Performing a break fall properly is mainly to protect your head and spine.
You have to start out by doing a forward roll and standing straight up afterwards, then do a roll stop by going through the roll and throwing your hands and feet out to stop you.
you then start going into shoulder rolls (almost like a hlaf cart wheel only you land on your shoulder and follw through to your feet. and again doing a shoulder roll stop by throwing your left hand straight out (palms down) to stop you, along with throwing your right leg over your left to help with the stop.
I would suggest you get tips from someone near you (or better yet; enroll in a school) who studies Aikido or Hapkido since they have similar concepts.

The best thing to do for this is to get someone to show you how it's done. Take a few classes in a martial art that specializes in throwing techniques, say, judo, aikido, and possobly sambo if you can find a club, but it's unlikely. Where the breakfall is not a diffucult technique to get good at, and once learned it comes naturally in any situation, trying to learn it by yourself through an internet source will prove a good deal of difficulty. For a quick tip though, it's surface area, and keeping the impact as little on the main part of the body as possible. When you are hitting the ground, you will want to take more of the force on the soles of your feet and on the palm of your hand and forearm. There is a great deal more though, perhaps read some of the other responses and put it all together, but most definetly get someone to personally teach you.
And i know for a fact that the first thing you will ever get taught in judo is how to fall.

An Aikido or Judo instructor would be the best to show you these. Falling is an important aspect of martial arts, and probably the single most useful thing you can learn.
Remember, protecting ones self in an accident is just as important a part of self defense as reacting to a punch!

In aikido the art of fall is called ukemi. It's difficult to explain this using word alone, but i try to give general description about safe falling technique. In general, two kind of falling technique, forward direction (mae ukemi) or backward direction (ushiro ukemi). In forward fall, you take you body down with one hand on the floor, then rolling with your shoulder, do not let your head hit ground. For backward fall, bend one of you leg and roll backward, and again do not let your head hit ground.

to fall, make sure you fall on your shoulder blades and pull your chin to your chest so u dont give yourself a concussion if you land on your head if you are falling foward, do a somersault to break your fall. If you are falling backwards, do a shoulder roll. Those are the best ways to fall in my opinion
