We are looking to refurbish my wife's childhood homemade wooden dollhouse for our children (for Christmas). It has some mildew and a rather musty smell. We have seen it mentioned to use a biocide on porous surfaces and were thus hoping someone might be able to recommend a solution (and/or cleanser that can be purchased) that will remove and prevent future mold/mildew. Anything used would have to be safe for children. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks so much!!

There is no true mildewcide -- no product that will kill mildew and guarantee it will not return. Chemical mildew inhibitors should be used with caution, as they are toxic to people and animals.

Cleaning agents that claim to remove mildew most often have a chlorine component. Chlorine both kills mildew and bleaches the darkened mildew filament. However, when such products are used, some scrubbing and rinsing are required to remove the mildew and soil residue. Otherwise, as soon as humidity and temperature conditions are right, mildew will use the residue as a substrate to grow on. A new supply of mildew spores is always floating in the air waiting for the right conditions. Commercial fungicidal products in pressurized cans provide some mildew protection. Check the label on the container to see what it claims to do and for instruction on how to use it safely and effectively.

Protective Sprays
Water-repellent and soil-resistant spray treatments inhibit mildew growth by reducing moisture or food available. Carefully read instructions on the label to understand the claims made and to know how to use the product safely and productively.

First wash down with hot water and soap...allow to dry completely. Then use a spray bottle and spray all surfaces with a solution of bleach & water. Do this in a well ventalalted area!! Again allow to dry completely. Bleach is a sanitizer and will kill any remaining mold. Some time in fresh air and sun would help with the smell after cleanning. You might want to repaint after you have cleaned it up. You also may want to ware a face mask when you scrub the mold...and you should do it outside if at all possible. Good luck. If you want to keep it for future generations make sure you store it some place dry when your kids are done with it.

First try white vinegar and water. (1 cup vinegar to 1 quart water). If that isn't strong enough use oxiclean or any kind of oxygen cleaner. Dissolve in hot water according to directions. Apply and let it sit for a few minutes. then scrub with a soft toothbrush or plastic dish scrubber. Then rinse with with vinegar and water solution, then wipe dry. It's what I use on my deck to remove mildew and it always works.

Tea Tree & Lavender essential oils are antiseptic, antibacterial & anti fungal. Lemon & Peppermint EO's are antiseptic & deodorizing. A musty smell is usually caused by lingering bacteria. You might try 2 tablespoons in your washer (add only after water has filled the tub to prevent staining of clothing) Essential oils are also all natural & non-toxic remedies with hundreds of uses. Peppermint oil is used to rid your home/garage of mice. They hate it and you don't need poisons or traps. Tea Tree is used on fungal infections of the toe nails and athletes foot. Lavender is a wonderful smelling flea repellant for Rover's bed. Most household cleaners use some type of essential oils like dish soap uses Lemon (it cuts grease & deodorizes).
