I posted a question yesterday about this, and I'm wondering if what I am doing is right. Today when I put him down for a nap, he climbed out of his crib. Without making a fuss, I put his mattress on the floor, laid him down and barracaded the door. Of course he didn't stay down, but he did stay in his room and play for hours (he didn't cry or call for me once) --he was exhausted when I initially laid him down, too. He did finally fall asleep on his mattress.
Well, tonight, he wanted nothing to do with his mattress on the floor. I tucked him in--business as usual, but this time he screamed and cried and climbed over the barracaded door (oh my) and came downstairs to find me. So, again, without fuss, I picked him up & took him back to his room, & I put the mattress back into his crib...he was asleep in a matter of minutes. I know in my heart he is not ready for a toddler bed & I'm sure he feels a sense of comfort in his crib, especially at night. *See Additional Details*

I'm just wondering if it is okay to put the mattress on the floor for naps & back in the crib for bedtime? I will move him to a toddler be soon since he's climbing out & I have a 5 month old who needs it. It isn't a problem for me to continue to do this, but I don't know if I'm unwittingly creating more problems...any thoughts?

I would give him the choice where to sleep if at all possible. I don't think 20 months is too young to be out of the crib (all mine were, and you don't want him getting hurt climbing out of the crib). You might find that after a while he will choose the toddler bed on his own consistently. Obviously he doesn't like the crib. And I laughed with memories reading your question... my oldest son (now an very creative 9 year old) used to just destroy his room at nap time. For him it was such an adventure! Good luck, but have fun with it. I promise you that you will look back and laugh. And make sure you get a few pictures of his room when he starts destroying it!!

You are doing everything right. Just ask the suppernannies on tv. :) But you have to be persistent. If your child is climbing out of the crib he could get hurt, so consider leaving the mattress on the floor for a while or going ahead with the toddler bed

i'm so sorry. We used a crib tent. At around 2 or 2.5 i desperate to take it off because of the fact of yet another concern. I ought to have left it on. He replaced into nice with a newborn mattress yet slept approximately 2-3 hours much less an afternoon on the instant and completely after that. Crib tents from Babiesrus are approximately $50 yet very well worth it.

Sounds like you're doing just fine. I moved my youngest son into a toddler bed at 18 months because he was a monkey and climbed out of his crib constantly.

May be time for a big kid bed, I had to do that when my daughter was 22 months, which I thought was early but I didn't want her to get hurt climbing out, and she took to it very well. She felt more like a big girl I still put a guard rail on the side she she felt safer, and she was.

May be you could take the side off the crib and put some kind of padding on the floor so if your child falls out it wont get hurt.

I had all five of my kids in a toddler bed by their 2ND b-days. They were all climbing out and I was worried they would hurt themselves-as you are.

At bed time I put them in the toddler bed (we did go to the store together and I let them pick out "big Boy/Girls sheets") and shut the door but I had a baby monitor in the room. I had a lot of sleepless nights but they did love the "BIG" beds.

Good luck.

if he's climbing out of the crib aslong as there is nothing he can hurt hiimself on in his room it sounds like hes ready for a proper bed with a side rail incase he falls out

as for the sleeping, i have trouble getting mine to sleep too but when hes tired he'll sleep so i don't push

sounds like you are doing everything most mommies do!..lol... like gonavy said there is a crib net like a tent made for the crib that works well....but it sounds like baby is just about to big for the crib anyway... and getting ready for his own bed!... its just going to take some transition time what you are doing is fine.... sometimes getting a twin size bed with a rail helps... the rail helps baby feel safer plus you can lay with him for a little bit before bed!

Trust your instincts (sounds like you're doing everything right). Every kids is different. My son preferred sleeping on the couch when he was a little kid (lol). My daughter wouldn't give her crib up! One thing I do know - I miss those years. You spend the first ten years of their life trying to get them to go to sleep, and then the second ten years of their lives trying to get them out of bed! :-D
