I was waiting to be wheeled in for an endoscopy at my local hospital and all of a sudden they called a Code Blue on someone else who was in the process of the endoscopy procedure. How common is this? (My instincts tell me that I witnessed a 1 in 100,000 occurrence). Next time I get an endoscopy, should I use another facility? Or am I overreacting? This was quite traumatizing. (I have used this facility for six previous endoscopies with no problem.)

You are way over-reacting. Code blues are called for a lot of reasons, not just because someone has died. Yes it's traumatic to be going into a procedure and seeing the person ahead of you code. That person may have had a bleeding ulcer that ruptured and may have started to hemorrhage. He may have had a vagal response and passed out (people do that with shots too), he may have had an allergic reaction to the medication he had prior to the procedure. He may have had undiagnosed sleep apnea and stopped breathing when he was in a certain position. Who knows. Or he could have been on the brink of death and it just happened to have happened there.

I had an endoscopy and it is no big deal. An endoscopy won't cause a code, there was something else going on that you are not aware of. So relax, get your endoscopy, go to the same place and stop worrying.

If the other person vomitted while the tube was being inserted, they could stop breathing, causing a Code Blue to be announced. I had an endoscopy and had no problem at all. You should be fine, especially if you are in good health.

most likely, it had more to do with the persons health than with the procedure itself
