site requires a Active X control or Adobe Flash Player. W hat is this? Do I have to? I'm still nervous about adding things. I haven't got Explorer 7, cause I'm too scared to install.

Flash is a "plugin" for a web browser that lets you view flash animations. It is very common and nothing to be concerned about. You can get it from http://www.adobe.com

The Active-X plugin however can be innocent and useful, such as on a trusted website, like Dell, Microsoft, etc, but can be used for malicious purposes by people who try and exploit your system.

Please do yourself a favor and download Mozilla Firefox, and cease using Internet Explorer. Firefox is a very popular, and much safer alternative to Internet Explorer which has a track record of security holes and instabilities.
Firefox is free and available at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Your doing the right thing in consulting a forum about your questions regarding software installation. Use this resource in the future, and remember that it is the ignorant computer user that has the most problems..

Many people have explained why you should have Active X and Adobe Flash Player. I use both myself. Adobe Micromedia has been a real pain of late as it will not download the lastest flast player 9. Here is the direct link that will open the download of flash player 9 for you.

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/fla...

About Explorer 7 I tested all three beta versions an I installed the final version of IE7. It was a nightmare as it used up all of my resources. Almost made my pc come to a halt. I removed the program an it went back to IE6 automatic. You will find that you will be far better of with IE6. If you don't already have it, you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com

I don't know the link, so you wil have to type in the search box IE 6 download and the correct page will appear for the download.

Hope you have a valid registration key for your Microsoft platform. Microsoft will perform a WGA, tool test atleast four times during download an installation to verify that you platform is legal.

Active X Control and Adobe Flash Player are both legitimate programs. Run them; download them; whatever.

Go to microsoft.com and download IE7, if you have the time. You should probably read the tutorial on it. IE 7 is a little bit different, but you'll get used to it.

One thing that you want to do is go to your Control Panel and make sure that your Windows Security Center is activated. It goes to Microsoft's website and updates your computer with security patches to keep it running smoothly.

When the Active X control comes up just allow it. When it says Flash player is required just download it. It is needd for a lot of websites. About Internet Explorer7...well dont download it. Get yourself firefox. It is better and safer than IE

Good Luck

Adobe Flash Player will allow certain flash files- moving animations, etc. to work on the browser. Active-X controls also allow content to run. Just pay attention to the name of the active-x because you will see one for windows media player, quicktime, etc. and this will allow you to view videos, see and hear online media. Most are safe but if you approve too many they will slow down your browser.

Dont just accept any activex control, if it says unsigned activex control never say yes. If its just an activex control agree, its basically just a little program that website needs to provide functionality, however once installed they can do anything you can do on your computer so make sure you trust the website that is trying to do the install.

As for adobe flash thats all good

some sites need active x contol, like MSN games. I had to reformat my hard drive last year, and i was afraid to download certain things. If it's from a source that you know is safe, like MSN or Adobe or something, i think it would be OK to download it. If you have Windows, you're gonna need to update every month or so for security fixes and such from Microsoft.
