I was baptised Catholic but do not practise the religion. I hate Christmas, frankly. I don't mind getting together with family and pigging out on homemade grub, but I don't like buying christmas presents or receiving them. I'm 20, and I figure when/if I have kids, I'll buy them presents for Christmas, because it's fun for kids, so if I want to have a few years of not celebrating Christmas, now is the time!
My problem is that much of my family will insist on buying my gifts. I won't refuse them, but I do not want them, nor will I buy them any gifts (I might get them wine/cookies, though).
How can I tell them this without being rude? Or am I being rude in the first place for not wanting to along with buying hundreds of dollars worth of gifts?

Well, it's not necessarily a money issue. It's more of a buying things issue. I can't say I'm a fan of "this is what I want for Christmas, go buy it for me", ya know?
And thanks! I AM a real winner ;)

I'd let everyone knew (ideally at or before Thanksgiving)... You could say that you've had it with the commercialization of Christmas and want to take a vacation from gifts. I'd follow it up by giving massive numbers of cookies, or other home made goodies (or maybe a really personal letter explaining why that person is so wonderful and important to you). Also, when you tell people your stance, try to make sure that you don't come across as trying to tell them how they should think of Christmas.
BTW: I love the family aspect of the holidays, but hate the presents. My family and I usually give either things the other person needs (my Dad is getting slippers), homemade goodies (he's also getting a batch of his favorite jam I make him each year), or donations to a charity they support. We do the same with my daughter; although she gets some presents, she also gets a beehive sent to Heifer International (www.heifer.com), and gives all the grandparents (she has 9 of them...) something she's made. My older kids get cash. My SIL gets a coupon for babysitting. She gives everyone an old photo she's found in my MIL's attic. It works out well.

Do what my family has done for century's make a gift of love. That way you give a piece of your self to each one plus it gives you something to do all year long. This also take all the commercialization out of the gift. Plus the real bonus is it places the love back into holiday. Jesus greatest give to us was love.He also told us to Love one another.
This way in our giving we celebrate the season and truly Honor our Lord at the same time.
I can understand that you do not want to receive gifts. Just a suggestion to love some one is to place their feelings first ,Your greatest give this season to all would be to smile and say thank you even if you hate the gift or the giver. Then give them something in return
After the party or Holidays this year you could announce to every one I was so overwhelmed by buying gifts this year I will not be buying any next year. I know you all will not understand I love all of you but this is something very personal to me. please accept my beliefs on this.
may you have a Blessed Christmas.

Halloween isn't the Devils day. initially it became into called Samhain, the Celtic New 365 days. additionally oftentimes used as The Day of the ineffective it became into believed that this international and the subsequent have been very close on that day and human beings might have fun their ancestors and pass away food for wandering spirits on the roadside. It became right into a time of magic and this has filtered down into modern-day subculture as ghosts, witches and so on. Being a Pagan pageant it had not something in any respect to do with the devil, as that's a Christian element. The call of Halloween is derived from All Hallows Eve which precedes All Saints day - a Christian pageant. Christmas too is initially Pagan - called yuletide. The Romans celebrated their very own version in the present day - Saturnalia. So neither pageant is Christian in any respect. in case you do unlike Samhain then that's ok, it is your selection. i like it however. by using ways, Easter became right into a Pagan pageant too and could Day became into Beltane, so that's beneficial to circumvent those besides.

Arent you happy that you are a lucky guy to get presents at 20. Christmas means an occasion of happiness, not on that day that Man was born. You shuld be communicate enough to let your wellwishers know what you want and what you dont want and the time. And if you arenot able to tolerate those who loves you, what is the treatment you are going to dish out for others.

That is your choice, and it's not rude, basically just tell them that they do not need to get you gifts, and that you want to save your money because your just starting your adult life, and need money, so you won't be buying Christmas presents for people

MAYBE YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO GET ALL OF THESE THINGS. YOU CAN HAVE GIFTS WITHOUT SPENDING A LOT. I KNOW. I DO LIKE YOUR WINE IDEA. WISH I WAS ON YOUR LIST. JUST TELL THE FAMILY HOW YOU FEEL. SOME PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU. YES, IT'S A SPECIAL TIME FOR THE KIDS, I AGREE.

Be brave, tell them you don't want any gifts for Christmas and you won't be getting them any gifts for Christmas. They will respect you for your resolve.
