i've been dating him for a month and 1/2 now, though we aren't official yet, and his birthday is really close to christmas so i kind of have to get him something. I want something that isn't too over the top or overwhelming for him, but that still says I like you a lot and wanted to do this for you...? any suggestions?

im in the same situation, except ive been dating this girl for the period of time! Why dont you try and take him out somewhere special? Maybe his favorite eatery, a home cooked meal, even a pair of jeans would work, or cologne!
I really do agree with you that you shouldnt go overboard, but one of those things suggested would work for me if my g/f bought the jeans, or just surprised me by taking me out somewhere!

most guys aren't too hard to buy for. get him something small. maybe you could get him a DVD he has talked about or you guys have seen together. maybe a book on a topic he finds interesting. most important think get him something that says " i listen to you". that will make him see that you care enough to pay attention to him.
