i' made some projects while in the university: 4 second voice recorder-player, digital clock, Matrix dot display. I did all that with the 8080 but i think you should be able to use the same hardware. if your interested let me know I can send you the material since i don't haven't published it on the net yet.

Well, the 8051 is a general purpose microcontroller, so it could be used for a wide range of projects. I've used that particular device as a keyboard controller, display driver, a high speed stopwatch, and a digital compass controller, to name a few things. Since it has a built in serial port and many I/O pins, it is good for interfacing devices to a PC's serial port.
