an action word

A verb is an action or a state of being.

When it is an action, it can be transitive or intransitive.
transitive means that it has a direct object or something that recieves an action (Kate hit THE BALL)
intransitive verbs are action verbs which do not have an object (It is raining. When it rains, it pours).

Verbs of state of being include the verbs "to be" and "to become". These verbs include what is known as a predicate, which describes what the subject of the sentence IS or IS BECOMING.

verbs have several qualities in their forms:
It will denote a person
1st 2nd or 3rd
(I, you, he)

A number
(singular or plural)

A voice
(active or passive)

A tense
(past, present, future etc.)

and a mood
(infinitive, subjunctive, imperative, participle, gerrund etc.)

The form of the verb can change with each of these.

English has many irregular verbs identified by their principle parts (present form, past form, participle form)

For example:
sing, sang, sung

I sing today.
Yesterday, I sang a song.
"Happy Birthday" was the song I sung.

adverbs are words that modify verbs, they usually answer the question how, and usually end in "ly".
He ran quickly. How did he run? quickly.

prepositional phrases are clauses that often modify a verb in the same way as an adverb. He ran with great speed. How did he run? With great speed.

It gets more complicated after that, but those are the basics.

Most verbs refer to actions. However, there are also verbs that describe states of being, i.e. "reside", "sicken", "freeze" etc.
