I'm only curious, I'm trying to learn about dog shows. Is there any type of breed that is known to be very good in dog shows? Or is it all about training and skill? Thanks!

Well, any dog recognized by the AKC that meets the breed standards can be good for dog shows. If you're a beginner, I recommend an easy going breed that doesn't require alot of grooming. It will be hard to find a show quality dog that a breeder will be willing to sell to someone that has never shown before. They usually make you sign a contract that says you'll have it spayed or neutered and then you cannot show it. You will have to talk to alot of breeders and tell them how serious you are. Start off with one dog and you will have to take conformation classes (alot of local dog obedience clubs offer them) that teaches you how to handle a dog in the show ring. Don't worry about breeding yet. Just focus on one dog and even if it doesn't do great, you'll gain alot of experience. Your best bet is to attend alot of shows to meet breeders and watch what goes on in the showring firsthand. You'll also get to see breeds that you may have not even seen before. Dogs like Retrievers and Boxers are good because they are easy going and don't require alot of grooming. However, if you aren't that strong you may want a smaller breed like a Pug or a Beagle. I also don't know you're personality, where you live, if you have a family, and so forth. Breeders can usually access if you have the right "lifestyle" for their breed. Also, do you have the time on the weekends to dedicate to dog shows? It can be costly with lodging, gas, and entry fees. I also recommend a book on Dog Shows for beginners. Good Luck. Also, have you thought about obedience or agility? I think they're so much more fun than conformation. They base wins on how you perform with your dog rather than strictly on its looks.

If you are wanting to show in conformation, it is best to read & research to find what breeds fit best in your lifestyle (they will spend a lot more time in your home compared to in the show ring!). Then if you pick a breed that you like that is low in AKC registration numbers, you will have less competion. For example, a show quality Labrador Retriever will have many other dogs to compete against, but a show quality Field Spaniel many be one of only 2- 5 entered at most shows. Winning in conformation is in the good genes of the dog & the skill the handler has in presenting the dog. You can learn these skills by apprenticing with an experienced handler, and/or taking handler classes at a local dog training club that offers them.

If you are talking performance (obedience, agility, flyball, herding, etc) showing, that is where training comes into play - learn by joing a local obedience club. There are always 'star' breeds that excel in these. Border Collies & Australian Shepherds being two - in nearly all the performance sports - but these dogs are wound up & wired to work. Many people can not deal with their in-home personalities.

Training and skill are definitely involved, but dogs shows are about how well a particular dog matches the standard for that breed. Dogs don't really compete directly against dogs of other breeds; they compete for the dog that most closely matches the written standard of their own breed. To do well in a dog show, new participants would be sure to get puppies from breeders who are actively winning in the breed ring.

Many breeds, particularly working breeds, have distinctly different genetic lines for show and working dogs, and in extreme cases, show lines and working lines are almost never intermingled. Show dogs are bred for the flashy looks and "correct" conformation, while working dogs are specifically bred for working ability regardless of things like color or a pretty head. In some cases, dogs from show lines make better pets than dogs from working lines specifically because they aren't selected for drive and stamina the way working lines are. (Please note that these statements are generalizations and by no means rules, and that they vary greatly depending on the breed)

there is no type of breed that is best for shows. all breeds are judged against their own standards. the only times breeds are judged differently is when in best in group or best in show. im not sure exactly how these are judged as ive never shown.

my advice is find a breed you like the look of. buy the best specimen you can as per breed standard. then get it trained by a show specialist so you can get its conformation right.

learn how to handle according to show rules.

then see how it goes.

Depends on what type of shows your talking about. Goldens are known for being good at obedience trials. If you're talking about conformation shows, those are all judged against breed standard and that's what you need to aim for.

Each breed is judged in their gender category first. The dogs that best match each standard in that go on to breed and then onto group (for example terriers) and so and and so forth.

However, each breed is judged based on how it conforms to the standard, not on a popularity contest. So, regardless of which breed is chosen, your dog would get judged on it's breed standard.

Willow,
Poodles are awesome in dog shows. They are always right there at the end. They respond to training very good. They are really smart dogs.
