say "thank you", if he/she asks why ,don't let him or her know. i think, if he/she was intended to be there and "for you" in his/her mind before him/her arriving, it's ok to thank him/her. but sometimes, people are just coincidently there, in this condition, say "thank you" is ridiculous...
