Dogs can be trained to understand commands, obviously, as many dogs are trained quite well. German Shepherd's may well be an intelligent species, as they have a larger cranial capacity and other, smaller breeds.

Why doesn't he do it all the time? Try getting a 3-year-old to do what you want all the time. It's not that different.

Cops do not always use German Shepherds. The dogs they use can be of any larger breed (or mix) and are put through rigorous testing before they are released as officers. German Shepherds ARE intelliegent dogs, but you can't expect him to be perfect 24/7, no one is. They respond to things they know. For example, he may understand "sit", but "go to the kitchen and cook me dinner" is a different story. Like anyone, they need to be taught commands.

Dogs do have the ability to understand words. But not in the same way you or I do. Humans understand words as a luanguage. Dogs understand words by the sound and tone it makes. I.E Sit,stay, down. These words have a specific sound when spoken. What the dog is recognizing is the sound that each word makes and not the word itself. Dogs learn commands not by word association but by sound association. Some dogs are even thought in foreign language's like German and Dutch. It doesen't mean the dog is bilingual. It just means the dog understands the sound each word makes and knows what to do when he hears that particular sound. It's the same when dogs are tought to obey a whistle. The dog knows that so many blows of the whistle means to do one task and so many blows means do something else. Dogs also understand posture. This is another way dogs communcate with one another and with us. This is why some dogs are thought using hand signals. The dog sees the hand signals as posture. Each hand signal is recognized by the dog as a different posture that solicites the dog to do a certain task. Example; When your dog goes in your room and gets one of your good sneekers and starts to chew on it? What is usually a persons first reaction? "NO"! "BAD DOG"! and you move towards him while saying this in a loud strong voice. What is the dogs reaction? He normally will drop the shoe and tuck his tail and drop his ears back and roll on his back in submission of you. Or will simply move away from you.. Right? What is happening is when you speak to your dog in a deep strong forcefull tone he is seeing this as a type of growl. Or disapproval Much like the Alpha member of the pack will exibit when another less dominant pack member will do something that is not considered acceptable. Let the same dog chew the same sneeker and say the same word "NO" BAD DOG" in a more soft or meike sounding voice? And the dog will most likely look at you as to say " Yea Whatever". Now I'm not saying you should yell at your dog contantly. I'm not saying that at all. All I'M saying is dogs understand tone and body posture or body luanguage. If your dog is chewing on your favorite shoe> Walk up calmly and say "NO" Drop it" in a normal but stern tone. If he just sits there and keeps on doing it move a little closer and use a little more firm deeper voice and "No" Drop it"! By the dog not dropping it the first time what he is doing is testing you the Alpha to see how far he can go with it before the Alpha goes to the next level or if the Alpha will even care enough to. And if you were to simply walk away he would most definately keep chewing the shoe because he realizes that the alpha didn't care that much about it to go to the next level to stop hiom from doing it. And no cop dogs don't always listen perfectly everytime. I have been a handler and trainer of police k9's for 12 yrs and they don't always listen everytime. In fact most police dogs have very dominant natures so what that means is that they sometimes wanna be the boss. But as a handler you have to be able to establish alpha leader over the dog in order for him to respect you and love you as his leader in order to build a strong bond with the dog so that he will be more willing to listen and to please you when you give the commands. The reason most police k9's are like this is we actually look for dogs that have strong confidence levels and strong drives. It makes them easier to train for police work because we use the dogs natural drives to help train the dog. And yes 2 of the dogs I have right now that are both fully trained police service animal are German Sheps. I also have a 5mo Dutch Shep (He's in training). And a 1yr old Rotti(She watches the house at night when I'm at work).. Gotta have a BIIIGGG yard for that many.

smart people don't always do what they're told all the time either. I had a Chesapeake Bay retriever who would get up on the bed, and when you told him to get down, he wouldnt do it. Man... You could say, "Moose... MOVE! Moosie, get down. Moose...Move it!" And he would just look at you like he didn't understand a word.

However, if you looked at him and said, "Moose. Excuse me." Then he'd get up, get off the bed, and it'd be clear as day.

Lots of people think that their dog is "dumb" because they don't do what they're told... On the contrary, the onus is placed on the person who is doing the asking... Because dogs do what they're told by people who know how to ask them right... I would venture a guess that your dog IS smart... But he probably doesnt believe you all the time. Work on bossing him around some more and I bet he'll get "smarter."

dogs cannot understand the words we tell them all they understand is the tone and pitch of the words we say and associate that with an action...so when you tell yuor dog to do something if you use different words for the same thing he will get very confused...german shepards are just regular dogs any breed of dog can be trained to be a "cop" dog...

I had a German Shepherd who seemed to understand everything I said to her, too. They're extremely intelligent. More than likely they're picking up on body language and tone of voice. I miss her!

All dogs (animals kept as pets) must be trained in order to do as they are told. I have 2 rotts. They are hand, and voice command trained (I did it on my own). However they to are just like people and don't always want to do as they are told they have minds of there own. I suggest taking more time to reemphasize what you want them to do. It is constant throughout their entire lives. Good luck.

I think that doegs can understand people, but I also think that even after a while of you telling them to do soemthing in particular- 1. if they do it right and you praise them they will do it next time you tell them to
or 2- they don't do whatu say, you get mad, they doin'tdo that again.

dogs are very intelligent and can learn easily.
