I'm thinking you must be spreading it on a still-warm cake.... make sure it is totally room temp.... dont' get in a hurry.
There is no fix, sorry, but you can chop it up and turn it into a trifle w/ whipped cream, nuts, and pudding!

It usually means you are trying to put it on when the cake is still warm from the oven. You need to let the cake cool first. If it is before you start icing that it is separating, you probably need to add more powdered sugar.

Well my mom is a baker and I don't know if what I'm saying is correct. She usually dips the spatula into hot water and pass it over the iced cake when she is done. Before putting decorations ofcourse.

make sure the cake is cooled.
If you added color to the icing you may have added too much. The die works as water unless you are using paste color.
To thckn it try using powdered sugar. Also try mixing it better. hope this helps.

Re-beat the frosting. This is the best way to mix it back together. To prevent this cover it with a cool damp towel when you have the lid off to use it.
