Keeping her room clean, putting away dishes, running a vacuum, feeding and watering a pet, helping put laundry away. Just to name a few.

At 9, kids can set the table, help with dishes, take out garbage, clean their room, vacuum and dust.
The can help an adult to do laundry and fold clothes, but not do this chore all alone yet.
It is genereally up to the parent to decide what the child should be doing, not the step parent. You start insisting on chores, and you'll be seen as the baddy here.

A 9 yr.old that lacks responsibility.....hummmmm. What is the world coming to when a 9 yr.old is allowed to be a child?
At 9, keep their toys put away before bed time,do their homework, and if allowed to have a pet then they should be taught how to take care of it. After dinner they were expected to place their plate and glass on the counter by the sink. At this age, I believe my children helped to fold bath and kitchen towels, something that if it wasn't perfect we could still live with it. They would help pick up sticks and pine cones before I cut the grass.I helped them make their beds every morning before leaving for school and work.
Most of what my children helped with was on the weekends, during the week I was more focused on their school work and activities.
You will notice that most were things they helped with, they are still in a very important learning stage. If his mother has not taught him to do any of these things then you can not expect him to do them right now, but allow him to work into them one at a time, and of course she needs to have the say on this.

taking garbage out
emptying and filling dishwasher
clearing and setting table
doing laundry
Anything really, but things that require machinery like mowing the lawn or fire like cooking need a few more years. But just so you know I was cooking, cleaning and running the house at the age of 9. You'd be surprised what a 9 yr old is capable of. My son is 3 and he works a few buttons on the DVD remote, he puts clothes in the laundry machine, he picks up his toys, washes his body and hair in the bath.

They should be responsible for picking up there things, also helping around the house sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, and garbage. I wouldn't put it all on at once. I know my Mom would make up a list of thing's to do every day for the week. I don't know if you give the child an allowance or not but if you do put a price on the job's and just pay for the job/s that the child does and on more. They don't need a lot of money at that age.

i started washing dishes when i was 9 years old. But my biggest suggestion to you is to talk to the kid. let them know where you're coming from. If you explain what it is you want from them , they are more likely to respond more positively. This way you can establish a good relationship and teach them how to behave.
Good Luck

They should keep their room clean, pick up their clothes and put them in the laundry, clean up the tub after their bath, and help set the clean the table. They should also be rewarded for their work when it is done consistently (a commission for the day's work as it were). visit daveramsey.com for more info on kid's finances. I have found it an excellent resource.

First step is to make them make their bed, everyday NO exceptions. Then I'd say cleaning their room and stuff thats pretty easy but still.
