From a practical viewpoint, people can't live forever. Our bodies are not made to withstand more than a century (at most) of life. Besides that, if none of us ever died, the earth would soon be over-populated, and there wouldn't be enough space or resources to go around.
From a spiritual aspect, our lives on earth are only temporary. If one believes in an afterlife, that is when we live forever in the kingdom of heaven where there is no war, pestilance, sorrow or illness. The soul is eternal, but our bodies are not.
No one likes to think about death, and that is why it is so fearsome. You ask what we leave behind. That all depends on how we have lived our lives. Some leave nothing behind but bitter memories; others have contributed something everlasting to the world and will be long remembered for generations to come.
If you want to leave behind a legacy, it isn't how many years you have on the earth, but what you have done with those years.
I hope this helps to answer your very profound question. Thank you!

Life, like death, is a mystery we will not know the answer until our day of judgment. Needless deaths all around the world I believe is evil trying to rid good, trying to take over the world. There is far more good people than there is evil. If all good people stood up and went forth to conquer evil, chances are pretty good that good would win over evil. Good people are the silent majority and why they/we are so silent is also a mystery.............to me anyway.

When you die, what is your legacy? What do you leave behind?
* Whatever material objects you own, to be given to whomever you like in your will.
* Whatever contributions you have made to society as a whole. If you have done research into the cure for cancer, you leave that. If you have written books or made movies, you leave them. If you funded a building at your university, you leave that.
* Images of you in photographs and video, as well as any letters, writings or recordings.
* Your children and their memories of you.
* The memories you leave with your friends and family.

Well, aren't we full of the Christmas spirit?
No one knows the answer to that. The world isn't just, that is obvious. This is one of the things that drives people away from faith.

We only leave behind our deeds, period.
"He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving" (Qur'an, 67:2)
