I am looking to buy a used car and I wanted to get a vehicle history report. All of the sites I found say you can get a free report but when you log in the only information thats given to you is the cars descrption. Then they ask you to pay up to $25 for a complete report. Do you know how I can get this report without paying a fee?

Most dealers will pull a CarFax report on request at no charge for a vehicle that they are selling. Most have a fixed price subscription to CarFax.

Keep in mind that YOU must pay for a CarFax report yourself in order to be covered by their guarantee. The dealer's freebie will NOT cover you.

There are several sources for car history
- State DMVs. Very slow to respond. They only have details on registrations and brands - when a car has major damage a brand is added. Also, they will only have data for one state - if the car has moved they can't help you. Fees vary by state.

The best source is Carfax. They collect data from over 8000 sources - and still they don't have everything. However, it's the most comprehensive source.

For free - since it costs the DMVs and Carfax - nobody provides it for free.

When dealers buy Carfax reports they pay a price that allows them to redistribute the report - so ask the dealer. You'll find thousands for free on Cars and AutoTrader.

Hi Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous sellers out there, who wouldn't think twice about ripping you off, if you don't know what you are looking for in a car, then the best thing to do, would be to get either the AA or the R.A.C to go with you and check the car over, it will cost you a couple hundred quid, but will be well worth it in the long run, and you know you will not be driving a cut and shunt, you will know that the front half of the car won't go a different way, to the back half. I hope this has helped you? Be safe on the roads. Be happy, from. happytiger.

When I bought my last car, I told the dealer I would not buy the vehicle without a complete carfax report and he printed it.

No. I did a lot of looking but only found those sites that give obvious info and ask you to pay for the rest. I would be curious whether anyone found a good site but am not getting my hopes up.
