U.S. Army
Basic Training- 8 long weeks
Yes, I completed it. Hoorah
Run 2 miles everyday including Sat. & Sun. Cleaned weapons, Painted alot (We painted things that didn't need to be painted) Road marched (alot) went to the range (alot) Got in trouble (alot)
The best part of being in the military was being around lots of great people from all over the country. I also go to see the world, did 2 tours in So. Korea, worked at the Post Office at Camp Humphreys. The worst thing that happened was, when I was at Postal School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison Indiana, got busted because I was late for a formation. My roomates and I didn't wake up and we paid the price.
What to take with you to basic, the clothes on your back and your toothbrush. Everything else will either be sent home or locked in a closet til your graduate.
I loved the Army. Had the best time of my life. Wouldn't change a thing. Take a tube of bengay to basic with you, the drill sgts. are going to work you out like never before. If you think you are in the best physical condition of your life, think again. It is going to hurt!
Good Luck!

They don't teach you how to shoot handguns, they teach you how to shoot an M16A2, which is an assault rifle that shoots 5.56 mm NATO rounds. It's actually closer to a shot gun as far as size goes, than a handgun/personal side arm an M1911 would be a handgun. There are some instances where you are authorized a personal side arm when deployed, but it is not part of the standard training, nor do most service members ever use them. You don't have to worry too much about not knowing how to shoot an M16, as they will teach you when you get there. In fact, the less you know when you go there, the less work it takes to correct all your bad shooting habits. I know people who have gone to basic with no experience and come back quite proficient. My own husband went to MCRD San Diego without ever having shot a gun, and came out with an expert marksman rating.

USMC
9 weeks
I was "recycled", given additional weeks of training, was given the option to drop but didn't take it
Learn military history, customs in the classroom, learn to march, go through gas chamber, confidence course, physical training, run
best thing that happened to one of the other recruits, her scores were so good she earned a dress blue uniform she didn't have to pay for
worsed thing, we were taught to iron almost everything, one recruit couldn't figure out, you can't iron plastic. She melted 3 bags before she was told to stop.
take with you to basic training, new underwear, and two or three changes of good clothes, uniforms and shoes will be provided. soap, deoderant, shampoo. no jewelry.
it is tough, but it is a good experience and what ever job you train for ( unless its warfare) will never be as hard again.

Navy boot camp, 8 weeks, served fours years, some push ups running, marching, a lot of class lectures, I got to see the world, one guy fell off the ship in the night and drowned, don't take anything to basic training they'll just make you send it back. Good experience for me, however, you should go to college, that's what I'm doing now.

-United States Air Force (Pararescueman)
-74.5 weeks, so about 1.5 years of training required.
-Completed.
-I had to run everyday, learn parachute techniques, take a 6 week course of combat diving, survival training, and take a 24 week course to become a certified EMT-paramedic.
-Best thing that happened to me was coming home after a tour in Afghanistan.
-Worst thing that happened to me by far, was losing my fellow Paratrooper and good friend Jason D. Cunningham (R.I.P) 3 years ago in Takur Ghar.
-Nothing you wouldnt want in the hands of your officers. :]
-Overall opinion, in this life, you have nothing to lose. By all means go for it and follow your dreams.
