I am told tht Chinese is being taught more than the European languages in the States now. Are you one that is trying to learn Manderin?

Yes I am taking Chinese. But I doubt that more people are learning it than European languages (especially Spanish). It might growing faster than other languages though.

Are you taking a Chinese class? I think a structured program might help you. It's cool that you want to be an exchange student in Taiwan -- that way you will learn how to read and write the Chinese characters that Chinese people have been using for the past 5000 years, i.e. traditional Chinese. However some people in Taiwan don't pronounce Mandarin very well, so beware of that.

1. You were told wrong. People might be looking for teachers because they think that Chinese is going to be the next "language you have to know to keep a good job in the business world", but that doesn't mean it's surpassed Spanish, French, and German (languages which have simply always been taught at American schools).

I don't know about the US but in France it has become the fifth foreign language learn at school
