I've never been a member of a church before. If I find a church that I like, how would I join it? Should I have my girlfriend go to church with me?

@Billions and Billions: Sigh, I don't want to become a fundamentalist Christian. I mainly like the community and personal growth and I'll know when the preaching is irrational.

I'm a big fan of Carl Sagan too and follow much of his beliefs, such as evolution.

At the end of the pastor's message go to the back of the church and talk to the pastor about joining the church. The the pastor would take you in his of her's private office and ask you questions about god and his son Jesus Christ. This is what the pastor will ask you do you believe with all your heart and soul that Jesus Christ came to earth to take our sins away? If you say yes. The pastor will than give you a church application for you to fill out. The pastor will assign your date of baptism if your joining a baptist church. And yes your girlfriend should join the church too.

I would suggest that you check out the Episcopal Church. There is a lot of ritual, like Roman Catholic, but logical explanations and a quite liberal, non-fundamentalist type church. Priests are just people and very accessible. Also, each church is a bit different in the "feel" but uses the same language for services. Generally sermons are SHORT, and more time is devoted to music and prayer, and communion during a service. Usually less than one hour.
Good luck. The ELCA Lutheran is a very good group to check out also.

These two church require high level of education for the clergy, some low churches (most of the fundamentalist churches are low) require NO special education or get degrees from their own colleges, not real universities. Anyone who tells you ONLY their group is right, is wrong, take the exit before the service is you can.
Good luck, use my email if you need/want other info.

If you want to join a certain church. You need to talk with the church leadership. Also attending Sunday School class is a great place to learn about Christ and what the church believes. You can also go to the website below and they can help you with questions on becoming a Christian.
As for your girlfriend going with you to church as the saying goes, "It couldn't hurt."

Make no mistake. Becoming a Christian is easy. It is the work, praying and learning that you will do that will need your efforts and the support of Christ.

But keep this in mind. Many will tell you that becoming a Christian is a waste of time. Well, the way to think about it is this. Time is what Jesus gives you because by accepting him as Lord and Saviour. He gives you time. Time that last an eternity.

One other piece of info. There is a difference between being religious and being a Christian. Religious is a person trying to reach a god of some form. Christianity is God reaching to man through Christ and showing us his Mercy and Grace.

Can I get an, "AMEN!!!"

Start going to the best Christian Church on the Planet. Eastern Orthodox Church. Russian, Greek, Antiochian, Serbian, Romanian, Georgian, these are all good ones in America. Look up the writings of Father Seraphim Rose. He is amazing. He is profoundly intelligent, on equal basis of Carl Sagan.

By the way, only the Eastern Orthodox Church has a concept of the timelessness of God, and entering into that timelessness.

I would recommend practicing praying to Jesus, just like you would a friend you havent talked to in a while. Dont expect him to say alot, but just let your thoughts bounce off him and he will guide you.
Get some things to learn about him and how he made you and how you are wired. My recommendations are: The message book, new testament version. 2) Wld at Heart, book by Ethelridge , 3) Music like Kevin Max, Caedmon's Call, Sara Groves -Other side of something.

Be mindful and careful about going to church. A church is a hospital full of sick people, the worst of which either 1) try to drag you down in their sins they refuse to let go of, just adding to your problems, or 2) are there to pretend they are now this "new and holy person" and are capable of judging everyone including you. The truth is that openly, vocally judging others is not a Christians responsibility or duty. Always remember, the church is the people who are in need of Jesus, not the building with a cross on it, that will always be just a building.

If you decide to go for it, then work on Getting strong in Jesus' knowledge and love first, and try to maintain that life for a couple years. If you want friendship on the matter, contact me via e-mail or go one of the following churches: a Bible Church, First assemblies of God, or a non-denominational Christian church and look for the people who notice your there and just seem geniune about wanting to help you out about learning about Jesus and God.

If your only purpose is to become, or be called, "Christian," then you can take your pick of all the denominations; probably one close to where you live would be best, or maybe I should say convenient. However--if you want to follow the path of true Christianity begun by Jesus and the early apostles, then it's a little harder. But basically you need to find an organization that teaches the Bible--not traditions, politics, opinions--and attend their meetings. Compare their teachings with what you find in the Bible (you should definitely be doing your own personal Bible study too). True Christians PRACTICE their religion, apply it in their lives. Look for that.

You talk to Jesus like He's your long lost friend. Ask Him to come into your life and to be your Lord and Savior. Tell him you are sorry for all your wrong doings and to teach you His ways. Mean what you say with all your heart. Get a Holy Bible, I think the the New International Version is a good one. Also King James is good. Some people like to add and subtract things into their own words and come out with what they like, like the Mormons and catholics. Go to a church that believes that the Bible is the only truth and anything that contradicts the Bible is wrong. It is good to have a friend or a family member for support. Two are better then one. Pray everyday and read your Bible daily.

does membership in a church save a person?

if you want to be a Christian (which means follower of Christ) then you must be a follower of Christ. to follow him you have to know what he taught. so read the New Testement and then if you would like the Old. churches can help you figure things out. all you have to do is show up on sunday morning. noone is ever turned down from going to a church. but beware of blind guides and that is why we have to read the Bible for ourselves.

Jesus was asked what to do to go to heaven. he repllied to love God and Love your neighbour as yourlself.

At this website you can get for free movies regarding the plan of salvation, families being together forever, our church and much more. this church is true. It was brought to pass by the will of god through his modern prophet Joseph Smith who went into a grove of trees to pray about which church he should join. He saw God and his son and was told not to join any of them. but in the due course of the lord he would once again bring the true gospel to the world. and he has. Believe and Do not fear.
Good Luck in finding the Right church for you.
Best wishes

Being a member of a church, in no form or fashion, makes one a Christian.
The Word tells us that whosoever believes on the name of the Lord and confesses with his mouth, the Lord Jesus, the same shall be saved.
Simply put..admit you've sinned, ask Jesus to forgive you and to come into your heart..then you need to find a bible based church and talk to the pastor. He will be able to direct you in the right path.
