I am in the same situation. It is very painful. I ended up losing my children due to a suicide attempt, and I went to jail. It was only for five days, but that is a long time to think about things. I know you dont want to hear stop drinking, but that is what you must do. I know how hard it is too. I have been sober for two weeks and two days. You cant make the decision to never drink again, you have to say to yourself or a support person "Im not drinking today" every day. To think of stopping forever is too much and cannot be done. Alcohol can and will destroy you and the people you love, I know from regretful experience, please please dont let it go any farther. I dont know about your religion, but church helps me more than AA. AA wont change you, you have to do it yourself. Good luck, God Bless, your life and the people who love you are worth it. It is hard, but not impossible. Be strong.

The best place to start is of course, AA. But there are so many factors to drinking problems that you should consult a therapist. If you look in the blue pages of your local white pages under alcoholism there are hotlines you can call to get info about local therapist. Unlike the last answer, drinking non-alcoholic beer is not the answer. Most likely this problem is bigger than just drink non-alcoholically. I am a therapist and have been doing drug and alcohol counseling for the last 8 years. So please, call AA and a helpline to get some therapy. Most people with drinking problems are also dually diagnosed (means they have a mental health issue too-it can be casue by the drinking or the cause of the drinking) it is a complicated field, so remember you are not alone and their is help available.

Practical tips on quitting or cutting back:

Many people in their early twenties overdo it with alcohol and/or drugs, 80% quit or learn to moderate on their own; they "mature out of it".

Many will tell you to go to AA; AA has a 5% success rate; people who are exposed to AA are 4-5 times as likely to end up binge drinking as those who try quitting on their own.

Here are various methods of recovery, ranked by effectiveness:

If you are really looking for help, try Alchoholics Anonymous. I've done some counseling in drug and alcohol, and they seem to have the best program. The only "but", and it's a big one, is do you really want to quit?

stop feeling sorry for yourself! Do something about it!! You obviously have a problem and I'm betting that no one on here is a psychologist or AA counselor. If it helps get an non-alcoholic beer, i.e. O'Douls. Do something before you end up in jail!

i agree with jimmy. AA is a good way to go, but if that isnt for you there are rehab programs and different therapies you can try. if you really cant figure it out, ask a doctor for help.

go to an AA meeting. you can find one in your area on the internet, when you get their talk to the people and tell them its your first meeting. then you made you first step.
