I want to know since most drug users seem to think marijuana is harmless, what are the true effects and how it is really dangerous? I'm asking cops b/c I don't trust drug users to know and cops would know better than anyone else having to deal with them all the time.

Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illnesses, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency toward obstructed airways. Cancer of the respiratory tract and lungs may also be promoted by marijuana smoke. Marijuana has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because marijuana smoke contains 50 percent to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke.

Marijuana's damage to short-term memory seems to occur because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. In one study, researchers compared marijuana smoking and nonsmoking 12th-graders' scores on standardized tests of verbal and mathematical skills. Although all of the students had scored equally well in 4th grade, those who were heavy marijuana smokers, i.e., those who used marijuana seven or more times per week, scored significantly lower in 12th grade than nonsmokers. Another study of 129 college students found that among heavy users of marijuana critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired, even after they had not used the drug for at least 24 hours.

In other words, it makes you stupid. As John Wayne once said, "Life is hard, it' harder if you're stupid." Why would anyone want to give up even a shred of their brain power, just to get high?

It has long been believed that marijuana is a gateway or stepping-stone drug and that using it leads to the use of other illicit drugs. Based on my experience, I would support that allegation. I have never met a single IV drug user who didn't start out on marijuana, usually in high school. I have never met a coke user who didn't start out on marijuana.
Additionally, I have a family member who is a lifelong marijuana user. He has a degree, but cannot form a complete sentence. He is the stereotypical "stoner." A total waste of a fine human being.

First of all, it is a rare cop who can accurately answer any question about the subject. The ones that you would think know the most -- the narcotics officers -- actually know the least. Give them a basic factual quiz on the subject and they will fail it every time. How do I know? I have done it at least a thousand times over the years. Not one narc has been able to pass the most basic quiz.

First, there is no evidence that very many pot dealers lace their product with other drugs. If they did, it would be readily apparent to their customers and they wouldn't stay in business.

Second, there is no evidence that it makes people lazy. There are at least a few billionaires who are pot smokers, including some of the founders of Microsoft.

It can cause respiratory problems such as inflammation and phlegm but the latest research shows that pot smokers actually have lower rates of lung cancer than average. Search http://www.mapinc.org for Donald Tashkin for news articles on that topic.

It does not make people stupid. There is simply no evidence for that. As stated already, there are a number of billionaires who smoke it. Marijuana most commonly causes stupidity and insanity in people who have never taken it.

The "gateway" myth has been so thoroughly discredited that even US Government officials now openly admit that it is absolute hokum. It was a fraud from the very beginning. You can read the history of how it arose at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/gateway_myth.htm

If you are really interested in the truth, you can find the full text of most of the major government commission reports over the last 100 years at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm

They all reached the same conclusions. They all said that the marijuana laws were based on racism, ignorance, and nonsense. They all said that the marijuana laws should have been repealed long ago because they do more harm than good.

The reason marijuana was outlawed in the first place had nothing to do with any claims of health effects. Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons.

The first reason was "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." The second reason was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth. You can read the short history of how the marijuana laws came to be at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm It is a funny and fascinating tale.

I can guarantee you that not one of the cops who responds here has read the most basic research on the subject. Not one of them could name the major studies of the subject or relate what they say.

Marijuana is not a harmless drug. Despite the logic of users, it is just at bad as Alcohol. It is a depressant, it dulls the resporatory system and circulatory system. Causing a delayed reaction to a situation. I have arrested many people who were HIGH on marijuana. Their reaction and demeanor has the same effect as Alcohol.

Im a police officer. Weed tends to slow down people's thinking.
They say it doesn't, but I see it all the time.
Also, it really is a gateway to other drugs. I know people hear that
all the time, but that's just the nature of the beast.

part of the trouble today is that alot of dealers lace their pot with other drugs or items,

Pot will make you lazy and not want to do anything ( except for eating as you come down from it)

It really is not that bad compared to drinking except it is illegal, which can ruin your life at this point, get a felony on your record and you can ruin your job opportunities forever.

i know as a fact that many police officers that bust drug dealers in chicago take their portion of the MJ and smoke it themselves.

all the police will do is tell you that it is against the law to smoke pot. they are not doctors or scientists that can tell you what the active ingredient in grass does. (it is very effective in people with glaucoma and some other maladies, but since it had been allowed for them, it was then outlawed again).

i can't smoke it; i am allergic to it and it gives me the opposite effect on my body than to those that do smoke it, like one of my relatives whom i see very often, and very often high on pot. all that happens to him is that he becomes less nervous. that is really all i ever see in those that smoke pot.

it's true that some dealers lace MJ with poisons like strictnine in order that it makes the smokers higher.

it's also true that marijuana in the united states these days is mostly hybrid grass. it is made from crossing powerful, pure marijuana like "acapulco gold" or "panama red" with grass grown locally, which makes it way weaker than what i used to smoke in my flower power days. gee, it was good then. (maybe that is why i wasn't then allergic to it)?

personally, from what i see, i think that smoking grass should be legal and taxable. i have never known anyone that got into a car accident when high on MJ. i never heard of anyone going into others' houses to steal in order to buy more grass (like crack fiends do). i have never seen anyone i know now or in my distant past do anything that is against the law when they smoke the weed other than to possess it, and, to smoke it.

do you know that about 50% of the us prison population is made up of dopies? another waste of our money. i can see if they are dealing mega amounts of heroin, cocaine (especially crack), or meth--they really are DRUGS. but pot? this is silly.

the reason i say it's so silly is because pot doesn't harm anyone. so therefore, since the government is greedier and greedier for our money as time goes on, it should legalize MJ. it should repair some of our roads with the tax dollars instead of spending $40,000 a year on the pot smoker that sits in prison.

i can just see it: "pot dens." they would be something like taverns, but they would not sell liquor. after all, drinking even one too many will cause you to drive your car into a wall.

so what if people get high on MJ?

ps to blue steel and lace: gee whiz! i was always an above average student and worker and mother and wife and on and on and on. it never made a difference one way or another that i had smoked pot. who knows, maybe i got good genes. i aced everything.

so did the relative of mine that i talk about above. in addition, he is an ultra-successful self-made businessman, father, and husband. his kids are smart too.

neither did i decide to go on to any narcotics or coke/crack as a result of smoking weed. i was offered the needle at a party one time. it was filled with heroin. all i did was tell the woman that i did not want to put a needle into my arm at all and that she should take what she wished to give me for herself. maybe i am strong willed.

i think that cigs are a greater carcinogen than is pure marijuana. else, i think that pollution is the cause of bad health, not just smoking cigarettes.

i sort of like what the police officer said: that drunks are much, much worse than those that get high on pot.
