Will handling puppies before their eyes are open cause sore eyes, or is it just a myth? My Jack Russell just had a litter of pups 5 days ago. We are keeping one of them and I would like it to get used to us. Now to mention that I just want to cuddle it. The mother doesnt mind us holding the pups but I have heard that if you handle them before they open their eyes it will give them sore eyes and lead to blindness. Fact or Fiction?

You should not handle new born puppies because that can affect its future.Puppies need its mom so it can get milk and the puppy you have might not be able to survive because it usally drinks its moms milk.My advice is that you take it back to its mother and wait a couple of weeks because there is no way you can keep a puppy that young and expect it to survive.if the puppy you have has a mom that lives with it make sure that you let that puppy hang with its mom for at least 6 weeks.I am going to get a puppy 7 weeks the the right time to bring home a puppy is at eight week because it can chew hard food. But i am pretty sure that a 6 week year old puppy could survive but a one that young is difinley not going to survive because it has no way to food.

Just a myth. Puppies can be handled very little from birth if the mother allows. Do not handle them too much or it might stress them. But early handling will aid in training later. When they are about 3 weeks start playing with the feet , mouths and ears to make grooming easier.

As long as you properly clean your hands before/after handling these puppies, the ''sore eyes'' concept is just a myth. I've raised 2 litters of puppies, both which I handled from the day they were born. None ever had any eye problems. (Or other health problems, for that matter.)

its a myth cause i breed and raise Min Pins and have had many litter and I hold and handle them from the day they are born,, i make sure they are all ok and make sure they are all nursing very well and i also weigh them each and every day to make sure they are gaining weight,,, puppies need to socialized as much as possible so they are ready for their new homes,,, all my puppies are prespoiled so they are used to being handled by adults and by children that way they arent affraid of children if their new homes have small children,,, I hope this helps and good luck with you new puppies

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7V5
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

It is a myth but be careful who hold the newborn puppies. Should be the litter owner only. Until they are about six weeks old anyway.

Well i would have to say myth but you should ask a vet. Make sure not to hold them to much (all the time) because they need to be with mom and sometimes they can get sick of being held that much but not sore eyes!
