can you put avi,mpeg,and divx files on a dvd-r?

i just want know if i can store them on those disc

Yes, you can. The difference is HOW they'll be recorded on the disc. If you put them all on, they'll be recorded as data, and probably won't be viewable on a DVD player.
However, if all the files on the DVD are the same format, you can burn it as a video DVD with different programs (www.download.com), and it will be viewable on a DVD player.
