Do you mean a 40-50 pound dog? I will assume that is what you meant. Annual vaccines will run anywhere from $150-$200. You will need to buy your dog flea protection like Frontline which is $45.00 for a 3 pack and the dog needs that for 9 months out of the year. Then you have to make sure you give him heart worm meds all year each month and that is about $85.00/year. OK then you would of course want your dog to have a very good brand of dog food such as Nutro which is about $30.00 for a 30lb bag which should last 2 months. Get a calculator and if you find that you can't afford a dog as your pet then I would suggest not getting one unless you can care for it properly. Good Luck!
ps - I forgot to mention that there will inevitably be illnesses along the way that you will need to take your dog to the vet so don't forget the doc charges and meds. And - if you get a dog that needs grooming by a professional that is about $45.00 per visit at least 4 times a year.

In my area, this is about what I spend in a normal year:
$35 per year -- annual vet checkup.
$25 per month -- food
$50 per year -- incidentals such as treats and toys
$155 per year -- heartworm preventative
All told, you're looking at about $550 a year as a baseline. However, that figure doesn't include special foods if the animal has allergies or health conditions, extra trips to the vet and special meds if the dog becomes sick, and any boarding or extra fees that may be incurred.
A bad year can top $1000 very easily. That's what happened when my first German shepherd began to lose all his fur and we were constantly taking him in for tests, meds, and special foods. We spent over $5000 in a two and a half year period, trying unsucessfully to get him well. (And yes, I'd do it all over again.)
So if you can't spare that extra $1000/year for an animal, you may want to rethink getting one. That's the worst case scenario, I'll grant you, but it does happen.

Well here is an idea. Lets say you adopted a full grown, healthy enough dog.
She will need shots, and a years supply of heartworm pills and flea prevention at her general yearly checkup. My yearly for 1 dog is $150.
She will need a collor leash and tags. $15
She will need a crate for travel $35
She will need food $15 week/ $780 year
grooming supplies such as a brush and shampoo $20
To keep it simple that is $1000 a year. Less than three bucks a day. Worth every penny... all 207 of them!

I feed my dog a premium dog food and spend about $30.00 every 5 weeks for food and her vet care and shots cost about $150.00 per year. So, if my math is right, that's about $450.00 per year. Pretty cheap for a dog that gives my family so much pleasure and love.

Depends on if its a active dog, if it needs special food, age, breed, same with vet.. depends if the dog gets sick, gets a cut.. its very hard to determine an average based off that. Dogs can be expensive and if you are questioning if you can do it or not, then I would suggest not.
