Quite a few people have spoken out against the Harry Potter stories and that's fair enough. After all it's a story about kids in a sorcery school but here's the rub: I don't hear the same criticism against
The Lord of the Rings which has good and bad wizards or
Star Wars which has good and bad wizards called Jedi or
The Wizard of Oz which has good and bad witches or
Superman who has x-ray vision

The list goes on. Fiction is full of characters with supernatural powers. If you disapprove of Harry Potter do you also disapprove of those other stories?

There are people that disapprove of all the books you mentioned; they would slam Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings together in an instant.

I don't believe that all materials are good for all children, per se, but just because a book mentions the supernatural, is no reason to run from it. In fact, my child and I have had some REALLY good, deep philosophical conversations based on the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. There is some excellent material there, especially about the general battles between Good and Evil, that can be put to good use.

How can a person be offended by a clearly science fiction book. I think anything that encourages kids to read, which harry potter does, is great (especially if it also is basically a coming of age story about 3 friends- with a little magic thrown in). I think people's main issue with Harry Potter is that it apparently is making kids think that magic is real or something like that- which might be partially true. But, don't we all believe in magic when we are kids, to some extent.. try Santa Clause and the tooth fairy. Playing make believe is just a part of being a kid.

I dont like harry potter for the following reasons...
1. He goes to bording school, bording school is elitist, I do not like elitist snobs.
2. He look like a nurd and nurds are not cool, not ever.
3. The harry potter book is a total rip off a book called the worst witch, which was written way before harry potter, its about a girl witch that goes to witch bording school. I hate people who rip off other peoples ideas.
4. I still have not heard a good explination how the harry potter books got to be soo popular with little kids, I mean huge thick adult sized books. I really think J.K. rowling has made a pack with satan because it does not add up at all. Im serious.
5. I went to this arts funding organisation last week and the guy there made a passing comment that J.K. rowling got a £5000 grant to help her pay the bills, rent etc whilst she wrote the first book. This was from a charity and she has never payed it back, I know it was a grant but you would think she would do something in return?
6. Harry potter just plain sucks.
7. Starwars does not suck.

I agree with you. If someone wants to make a big deal out of Harry Potter, the are probably overlooking many other FICTIONAL characters & story lines that are easily viewed as acceptable in movies and books. If someone cannot see something as the fiction that it is, they have serious issues with reality.

I LOVE harry potter. its the book that got me into reading. It showed me that you can escape your own world for a few hours, and travel into anything you want to.
If and when people are offended, they are just scared. which i think is stupid...
I have a friend who LOVES star wars, but thinks LOTR is the most satanic movie ever made, when the basic concept of the movie is the same: good group vs. bad group. hes one of the most close minded people i have EVER met... its aweful.
i think if people are scared of superman, the wizard of oz (which is simply a childrens movie to make you beleive in yourself) and everything else people cry about, they are simply weak, and are mad that they cant control everybody else.
people are made diversial. if we are all so naturally different, why would god want us all to be the same...

I know what type of people you are referring to they make my heart rot. My teacher I confront about religious fallacies every day she believes the WHOLE bible you have to be pretty closed minded to believe part of it but she took an even greater step to take the whole damn poison pill that scripture is.

She does not allow her children to go trick or treating. Not for their safety, she says that Halloween is evil.

I tried to explain how the origins of Halloween do not matter, we just eat candy it’s not like were or praising Satan.

For the same reason that I (an atheist) celebrate Christmas she should allow her kids to go trick or treating. To explore and have fun.

She also said how Harry potter is a pagan book.

I tried to explain that although there is some real witchcraft in the book, that it is a fairytale and is to be enjoyed and not to be taken literally (like the bible)

SHE ABSOLUTLY BELIEVES EVERY SINGLE WORD OF SCRIPTURE, I find contradictions and she will just shrug it off she is the worst/best Christian ever you be the judge.

lots of people think that J.K rowling is a pagan that is taking revenge on the children of Christianity. However that isn't true. J.K. Rowling is simply a talented authoress who has knows more than the average person about Roman myths and the like. Simply put, if people think it's a sin to read Harry Potter, than it is a sin to learn about Roman myths and to read mysteries.
