If you can convince one delusional superstitionist to give up their silly god and face life from a rational perspective, it is worth it.

To some extent. The problem a lot of people have in debates is that neither side finishes the debate having gained anything, because neither side actually wanted to debate in the first place -- they wanted to proselytize.
Debate is spurred on by intellectual disagreement, and the purpose of the debate is to resolve the disagreement, or at the very least, accurately present both sides to a 3rd party. Any debate that doesn't do either of these is a waste of time.
One of the clearest signs that a person is not debating is that he or she has never read single book from their opponent's viewpoint, nor can they correctly summarize the other person's arguments. In a true debate, the debaters could switch sides and still effectively argue for their position.
That's rarely the case on Y!Answers.

Waste? It's not a waste! Religion is causing loads of violence, dispelling it from humanity is a worthwile deed. The very ideaology religion usually proposes about an afterlife and god belittles the meaning of a human life, something we can observe with all 5 senses and know is real. That's not to mention it is just not true!!
Religion itself is a waste, but spending time getting rid of that plague upon society is definately not.

I find myself telling people why religion is crap very often. I think that it's a subject worth discussing because so many people are wasting their lives on imaginary things like God, heaven, and hell. Science has told us that when we die we rot in the ground, but many people don't want to accept that fact. Instead of actually doing something about the fact that life ends when we die (i.e. pouring money into scientific research to try to slow down aging) , they fool themselves into believing that life lasts forever. It's enough to make a person hate religious people. Their minds are closed and ignorance is bliss.

It is not a waste of time, as you are in high school , you need to find who you are, I am 15 and it seems that we will never find a way to cope with our lives until we have found a assurance that our eternitys are secure in an ever chaning world. You should place your bet on God, the one who, if you trust in Him will save you with the truth that will never fade away. Once you have found that security you can live life to the fullest and "have a party". God bless and show you what real time is.

True. However, if I keep on playing Solitaire, I will have wasted a great deal of my life over Solitaire. So what? It's fun, and it helps me procrastinate doing important, useful things.

Everyone wastes their life on something. Just find what you like wasting it on, that's the ticket, and if it's religion then it's religion.

If you're a atheist, what difference does it make if you waste your life or not? Your life is a waste only if you believe in something beyond death.

Debating over anything is never a waste since it sharpens reasoning, speaking, and/or writing skills!

I don't really think about it much other then this site, so... Unless I start spending my life on here, I'm safe from not wasting it too much.
