I have a similar situation at work. Keep your relationship professional. Socializing, smoke breaks, lunches, etc., are not required. Be polite. Don't talk about non-work related topics to her or around her. You usually find these people to be unreliable, gossips, and attention seekers. These people are not easy to put in their place because they do not recognize how they contribute to the problem. She will claim victim status and you will only give her more to talk about. If you give her nothing, she has to make things up. Others will pick up on her poor behavior and you will stand out as a mature, responsible, reliable employee. Bosses notice. In my situation, I avoid the breakroom, it's toxic in there anyway. When my problem talks to me, I answer but I do not engage in social conversation with her. I smile and say hello, let her know when she's needed, say "have a good night" and that's about it. When she tries to involve me in office politics or gossip I say I don't know anything about that and would rather not know. A couple of times she's made derogatory remarks about other co-workers and I've just said either "that hasn't been my experience" or "perhaps you misunderstood" or "well, we all have bad days". Non-committal things that tend to defend whomever she's attacking at the moment and usually end the conversation because she doesn't get support for her accusations. Whatever you decide to do, don't sink to her level. Let her play her game alone. Good luck.

Seeing as how this is in a work environment, always be the professional, no matter what SHE does.
Don't try to "put her in her place". It won't work, and the workplace is not the place to do such things.
Try speaking to her supervisor about specific incidents, and keep the emotional side out of it. Relay factual evidence of her attitude, and see if you can follow it up with other co-workers. If she has a level of seniority, be ready for problems if you confront her supervisor.
Otherwise, consider finding another job, or ask to be transferred to another department.

Oh jeez, I had the same problem. This old lady was a super-*****. She would wait until the schedule was done and ask for 4 days off. So it would all have to be changed. Then she would show up an hour or more late with no explianation or excuse. She would be so sweet when she wanted something from you, and if you wouldn't do it, she'd go into a rage fit. She got fired, and wrote a hate-note talking about how we all wanted her gone, and she hoped we were happy. Well, we were!
You should go to your manager, or the manager's boss and file a complaint.

Oh boy, some high school behaviors dont leave people at that old age. i would have fun and lightly poke at something that is a flaw. sadly, it is possibly an attempt to make sure the boss knows everyone else's flaws. some bosses are apt to fall for these kinds of remarks.

She is not a schizophrenic because she would never need to turn her back on you to make snide remarks. I think she is your typical female dogie, I have tons of them at my job as well and the older ones are the worse.

Simple ignore her. The next time she smiles at you just turn your back on her and look the other direction. She'll get the message. People, no matter what age, hates to be ignored.
And just to tell you, most people never grow up, they just grow old.

Ignore her. If you must speak to her keep it strictly business. If you tease her or talk about her behind you are back then you are no better.
