OK, so he's been to alot of bad websites, and now Windows XP needs to be completely wipped out! I've tried System Restore and it will not work. It works in Safe mode, but he refuses to use this as it has no sounds, and he doesn't want to push F8 each bootup.

The problem is that when you get to the login screen (blue screen), you can click on any account you want, this thing pops up and wants you to click "yes" or "no". Either one you click, it restarts the whole computer. I've ran scans from Xoftspy and mcafee antivirus, but it won't find anything! I've given up!

I can't reinstall Windows XP because windows activation will stop me from doing that! Its only 30 days!

So I'm thinking about giving him Linux! Are there any security flaws with it? Is there a firewall for Linux. I haven't done anything to the computer yet, but I'm thinking about giving him Ubuntu or Slax.

He won't stop looking at it, and no I don't live with him. thanks God, because that computer is loaded w/porn

Antiviruses do not detect bad software from porn sites as these software are mostly Malware of the most malicious form. Having just one antispyware program is inviting trouble. Your chances of being secure are higher as one program detects some things than another doesn't. I know many free antispyware programs that are as good as ones you pay for. The best are:
Ad-Aware SE.
Spybot - Search & Destroy.
SUPERAntispyware.
There is also a horror story regarding spyware that you and your Dad might find interesting.

Run scans with these and remove
I wish you the best of luck.

LOL...

Tell him to put all his porn onto CDs, organized into neat folders and subfolders categorizing whatever. Give him a safe with keys so he can store his valuables in there out of sight.

Get the LATEST VERSIONS of AVG Anti-Virus, Bazooka Scanner, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware (once again please check for LATEST VERSION!), CCleaner, and WinRAR.

Run these while in Safe Mode! Update them in Normal Mode!

WinRAR is handy for compressing and segmenting those big videos.

The above software is free Shareware available at download.com.

I also use McAfee Antispyware which I am not sure is freeware. You might have to pay for it. My college gave it to me for free along with McAfee AntiVirus (I prefer AVG's shareware, though).

These software may slow down your father's computer if they all have automatic updates, which is actually helpful for a while. But you might want to eventually teach your father how to turn off automatic updates and update manually (important!). Use the help files for doing this.

Tell your father to scan his computer once every week or couple of weeks. It's good computer hygiene.

No need to change to another operating system. Think of this problem as punishment for bad behavior LOL

I think your computer might be shot, but if you get another one, the programs from Lavasoft work great at cleaning the computer out. The smart search works pretty fast too.
