Hi, just graduated college and have no idea where to begin, best brand, safest, best mpg etc.

Basically, Im looking for aroun 20k

All the sites i've seen show stars, but they all seem to be around 4-5, so are they all just as safe? Is a Volvo S40 close to the Toyota Prius? They cost about the same.

Any advice? Thanks.

The above link is a comparison chart I compiled just for you.
I'm suggesting that you look at a Ford Fusion.

I think it's a great value for your budget. Also Ford credit has a Recent College Grad program for you. That is in addition to any other rebates &/or incentives that you may qualify for.
To see what incentives are going on right now go to

also ask your dealer if "flex-buy" is available. It's a program available in 48 states but I don't know where you live.

Honda is the car that still sells for a lot of money after they get high miles. That speaks for quality and is a good, safe choice - moreso than any other brand. The Nissan 350Z looks very cool so that's always enticing, but I'm not sure of the price. Yahoo Autos is a good way to learn about cars and shop for cars:

This website has the MPG of all cars ever made:

I would go to Kelly Blue Book and look at comparisons between different vehicles. Most manufactures offer incentives and/or rebates for recent college grads. I purchased a Nissan Altima after graduating from college and I received a discount with a copy of my diploma.

If you're looking for practicality, cost effectiveness, reliability, safety, and best mpg, I would suggest a Honda Civic sedan. It has a 5 star crash rating, w/ standard air bags and you just can't go wrong with a Honda's reliability.

Lotus Elise :).

It's too bad that (because of politics) cars like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_EcoRacer don't go in production.

Generally, it's economically better to buy a (small Japanese or European) car which is 3 years old then a new one.
American cars weigh t-o-n-s, and thus never get a good mpg.
