I have a 1996 buick skylark with the 2.4L twincam 4 cylinder. It has cracked its head at cylinder number 3 and its running horrible. My question is.... Can I put in a 3.1 or 3100 v6 engine since the car is made to handle both 2.4L and the 3.1 for the optional motor. I know the ECM needs to be replace and the Wiring for the motor to ecm and emission control systems. I just need to know if the transmission it has will mount and work with the 3.1. And the difficulty of doing this job for the wiring and installing,,

What causes it to crack its cylinder head. to prevent this from doing it again in the future. This isn't my car but I can tell you has have been neglected the air filter was never changed the air box was full of leaves and dirt and the antifreeze was supposed to have dex cool but it has a Greyish green anti freeze Must have never been flushed. And the Oil was black as charcoal But full on the dipstick. and this a girl thats driving it and she told me a Shop had done a tuneup this summer. It looks like to me they just looked at the car and not have touched anything and charged her for it. I have replaced headgakets before on fords and replaced an intake gasket on a 1999 Grand AM with 3.4 and this engine looks like its going to be a pain to do compared to those...

I am an ex-tech and a current service advisor at a gm dealership for last 16 years.
the 2.4L usually had a 4t45e transmission, and the 3.1L usually had a 4t60e transmission. they are different. the entire wiring harness and pcm would have to be replaced, and the trans, and probably some mounts.
May be more money & time then the car is worth.
You could probably get a cylinder head for the 2.4L and the gaskets for about $1000.00 or less.

You wil be way better off just fixing the Quad 4. The cost of the head and gaskets would be nothing compared to what you are about to get yourself into. Those little things run very good when they are right. You would need the fuel system, wiring harness radiator, flywheel, starter, mounts, ECM..... the list goes on forever for a swap

take the oil pan off and verify the backside of the pan for great chunks of metallic. if there are vast chunks on the backside of the engine, youve have been given a blown engine. believe me, a twisted bearing will make an extremely undesirable noise like that. how ever, if it isnt over heating, it may merely be a bad rocker arm, knocking shows a loss of oil. take the valve conceal off, clean off the rockers, and crank the motor over some circumstances. verify the rockers, in the event that they are all lined in oil, then they are high quality and its some thing else. very practically guarenteed its the two the rockers or a twisted bearing

Cut your losses and give up on the Skylark! You will spend more money than the car will be worth when you're done. If you try to repair the 2.4, it probably won't last very long.
