First off, everyone likes different kinds of wine, with that said Yellow Tail is not half bad, I'm sure wine experts don't like it but that doesn't mean you'll dislike it to.
It depends what kind of wine you are used to and what you like.
If you just want a casual, affordable wine, they make a Merlot that is decent, but its a $ 7.00 bottle of wine and if you try a $ 20.00 bottle of Merlot you'll taste the difference.
Personally, I tried Yellow Tail and it was fine, then I found out about Coppola Merlot and I visited a vineyard and had their Merlot and they were incredible.
But its all about what you like, give it a try and don't worry what anyone else says or thinks.

I have a hard time bringing myself to cook with Yellow Tail. Here's the deal:
When you make wine, in order to have a full and concentrated flavor you want to keep your yields [amount of grapes grown] very low. Yellow Tail imported 2.3 million CASE [12 bottles per case] of wine to the US last year. Most commendable foreign wines ship 1,000 cases or substantially less. Yellow Tail is producing so much wine that it's flavors are very generic, not very deep and hardly even fit for cooking with.

Yes, it is cheap, both in terms of price and the quality. I've had it once myself and I would never buy it again. Given that most Australian wines are not cheap, it is one of the lesser priced wines from that country.
If you're just starting to drink red wine, it probably wouldn't be a bad place to start but you will quickly find other red wines, from a variety of countries, that are better tasting and better value for your money.

Yellow Tail has red and white wines that are DELISH and run about $7-8 a bottle.
Yellow Tail is a favorite for me because of my college-student budget.

The Valpolicella wine region in Italy has some fantastic wines. If you have a Waitrose nearby, try their own brand of Valpolicella for about £4 or £5. Enjoy!!

Yellow Tail isn't just a red wine, but, YES, I think it tastes cheap (and I don't even know what it actually costs). Also has a "cheap" lingering smell to it.

yes, yellow tail is a lesser quality wine, but some of their varietials are drinkable. if you're not looking to impress anyone, yellow tail is not a bad option when you don't want to spend a lot of money.
