The female body produces something called luteinizing hormone (LH) It is present in the urine almost all the time, but increases significantly-- surges-- about 12-36 hours before ovulation.

It is possible for your body to "gear up" to ovulate, leading to an LH surge-- and then, for some reason (such as stress, illness, travel, or random fluke), your body fails to release an egg. When this happens, your LH surge will dissipate and your cevical mucus (a signal of fertility) will dry up. Once the stress is resolved, your body will try again. This can happen more than once per cycle.

So I would say that LH is responsible for ovulation ... it is what prepares the reproductive system for the release of the egg and stimulates it. But if you wanted to be really technical, estrogen is what causes you to develop eggs in the first place and is thus actually the 'root cause'. But I'd still say LH is more 'responsible'.

most of the hormones in your body play a role in ovulation.. the estrogen rise causes the lining of the uterus to thicken and then fsh (follicle stimuating hormone) and Lh (lutenizing hormone) rise sharply triggering ovualtion itself and then progesterone rises right after ovulation. so its kind of you cant really have one without the other...
