If the dog is young, this may be why. He hasn't fully learned how to hike his leg like an adult dog. Kinda like when you were a kid. We all started by sitting on the toilet with a "mr.ducky" toilet seat. And not until we got older did we start standing up to tinkle..lol

Join the club. I recently put my 9 year old Shetland Sheepdog (better known as a Sheltie) to sleep. Six months ago I bought a new one. He is still not lifting his leg and he sees the other boy dogs lift their legs. I think it may be a bit of laziness. I personally like the leg lifting because then I know if he used it or not. It is a little difficult to tell if he is squatting or just standing up at times. I have not gotten him fixed yet because I am afraid he will never lift his leg. Although I did find out he has only one testicle so maybe that is my dog's problem.

Most of the time, lifting their leg to "mark" is a behavior that is learned and not instinctual.

If your dog is raised mainly alone or with female dogs who squat, they often times don't pick up this habit. Also if they are neutered, they also don't feel the desire to mark their territory.

Be glad, most folks love if their male dogs don't pick up this habit!!

Our male dog never lifted his leg until we got a second male dog when he was 2 years old.. after sharing walks together and watching the leg lift habit for about 6 months, our first dog began to try it himself and has now developed the trait as well.

Funny that he is an Australian Shepard so is my boyfriends(neutered) male and he pees like a girl too. Now I am curious. I will watch this question. His dog is about 1 year and maybe 8 months old.

I HAD my male Doberman neutered - so he would NOT lift his leg to pee. So if he is fixed - then that could be why.
But it was funny - when he was a pup....he watched my two other female dogs squat - so he did like them. But Now that he is fixed - I don't have to worry about him lifting the leg.

Some just do and some because they are around the opposite sex a lot and when young. As far as the answer about a female lifting her leg? They do. Ha - ha.

hello
This is a learned action ,my dog is male and he's 19 months old .He just started doing this .He also started dog school and that's when I believe he start this .I think its a form of marking ,so when you walk with your dog .he'll go every few feet and then lift ,if he smell something good to him. This is something you don't really want ,I though we were pass it and were not so luckily ,but I still love my dog anyways

He is not yet old enough to lift his leg.Usually male dogs do not start lifting their legs until they are a year old.

my dog does that, my boyfriends mate says its because he is gay, but as for the real reason.....no idea? Maybe it depends on the size of the dog, my dog is very small so maybe there is no need to lift his leg?

If he was neutered that could explain it and another is that if he has never seen another male hike his leg then all he knows to do is squat
