1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temtation and a snare. and into many foolish and hurtful lusts. and drown men in destruction and perdition.
Right above that it says with substance of covering you should be content with these things. While there is nothing wrong with having money it sounds like it would be harder to be a christian?
Isn't it harder on movie stars and captains of Industry or politicians to be a good Christian. Seems even religious leaders who are rich have a lot of trouble staying out of trouble or is it just me?

There is more than verse 1Timothy 6:9.

Answer: The key phrase in verse 9 is “who long to be rich” not the rich. Verse 17 deals with the rich,

Detail: In the first letter to Timothy, Paul discusses what to teach. Your verse is from the lesson 1 Timothy 6:2-10 and the mandate following 1 Timothy 6:11-21.

1Tim 6:2 …Teach these things, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. 3 Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4 Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5 These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.
6 Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 7 After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.
9 But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

1 Tim 6:11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses. 13 And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 15 For at just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. 16 He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.
17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
20 Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. 21 Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.

In the world's view:Yes
In God's view: No
God does not measure a man by his success, but by what is in his heart. You also have to know that money means nothing. Ask every movie star anybody, they are not satisfied with it. Money brings trouble and the same amount of worries the poor have. Its funny that this is the American Dream. But once one gets there they realize it is not everything they wanted. Large amounts of money even seperates us from a relationship with God. Notice Jesus explains how hard it is for a rich man to enter Heaven. The rich are easily tempted by the self pleasures they gain from money and lust over things they don't have. You will never be content with how much money you have so don't worry about it. The only thing that matters in this world is you relationship with God.

I hope this is a joke but just in case Ray, it is not okay to ask someone how much money they earn. I don't care who they are. I assume he is young and he sounds very responsible to me. He can only go up from here. I have heard of too many people whose daughter's were with men who didn't make them happy, treated them badly and cheated on them among other things. A good guy is worth his weight in gold.

It depends on what he wants to be successfult at. If he has a lot of money, he is certainly succressful at raising money. I think it is a pretty holllow success, however.
But something else disturbs me. Who says we have to be successful? Isn't it more important to just do what we should do? And if that doesn't produce success (in whatever field), then so be it, as long as we are successes in being decent human beings, and good Christians?
You don't have to be successful at making money, you don't have to be successful in influencing people, you don't have tobe successful in helping your church, you don't even have to be successful in raising your family. You just need to be and do what God wants of you, and let Him worry about the results.

Yes. It's harder for a rich man/woman to be christian becuase they let the lust of money and power corrupt them.

It's not impossible for a rich person to go to heaven; just harder becuase they have so much worldly wealth.

That is the type of success which is measured by the world!

God, on the other hand, looks at the richness within your heart!!!

Success is a TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE thing. If someone considers themselves successful you nor I have any right to say they are not. Remember the old saying, :One man's meat, is another man's poison"!
