Many fisherman know the rock bass as the goggle eye or red eye, names derived from the fish's bilging, reddish colored eyes.

The rock bass is a member of the sunfish family, but is not a true bass. The fish can change color in chameleon fashing.

Like most sunfish, rockbass seldom exceed two pounds, although the world record is a 3 pounder caught in Ontario in 1974 and a 3 pounder caught in sugar creek Indiana.

Ambloplites rupestris, most frequently called "rock bass" here in the southeast. There are local variations of the fish, which are in the sunfish family.
