Is your vet suggesting you euthanize him/her verses treating them?
If the vet suggests putting them down is the best option for your situation, my first reccomendation would be to ask that you are there with them when they go.
Being euthanized can be a very scary experience for a pet even when they don't know the end result (life loss). Having their end moments be of several strangers/vet techs and a cold table can be scary. Having a friendly familiar face there (you) to pet them and soothely talk them over to the other side is the best present you can give your faithful pet in that situation -- no matter how hard it may be for you, think of THEM in that stance.
Other than that, really the best advice is to remember the good years you had together. Maybe set up a personalized stone in your family garden with their name?

You will never get "over it". But you will get to acceptance. There are 5 stages of grief.
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining - if only this, then that would not happen
4. Depression
5. Acceptance
If you get stuck in any one of these, part of you will be stuck in that year it happened.
This is true for divorce, moving, changing schools, changing where you go to college, changing friends, grandparents passing, and pets passing plus all other major life changes.
Accept the fact that GOD loves everything and everybody, and all of GOD's creatures have spirits that belong and go back to GOD.
Love is! Accept the fact that you loved your dog and your doggie loved you back!
GOD bless
(I had 11 dogs once when my dog had 10 puppies)...and that was many many years ago. I named and loved everyone, even after they were adopted by others.
Again, GOD bless.

i am so sorry that you have to put your best friend down as we just had our dog put down last weekend and it is difficult. I miss him every time i walk through the door and going to bed at night is hard cause spike would always race me to bed and then try to take half of the bed through the night.
it will get better as time goes on but for the first little while it will be tough. i just keep Kleenex in my pockets in case i get upset but just try and find something new to focus on (like maybe volunteering at a local animal shelter) i would not recommend getting a new dog right away as you need time to grieve but you could always look into getting a new friend in a month or two.
Good Luck and Once Again I Am Very Sorry For Your Loss

I had a small dog that had ceziers all the time, and we gave her pills every day twice a day for 5 months straight, and it did not work so we put her to sleep.
I Just thought about other things and I got over it pretty quick.
