Well, I'll start with what age did you have a TV in your room? I got mine in 6Th grade and don't feel like I was damaged :).
My kids don't have TVs in their room, although my step son does at his mother's house. Personally, I wish he didn't because he eats in his room (alone), stays on his computer, and plays his games on the TV. He's only 10 and is on his 2nd tv. He's had one since he was 4. It's a great babysitter for his mother.
I don't think my kids will have one in their room until they are much older, if at all. I like them close where I can be involved with what they are doing.
So, after all of that, I'd say look at the reasons for the tv and go from there.

No doubt I will get slammed for my answer but this is what I believe!!
My 2 and 4 year old have a tv in their room now. They do NOT watch it all day. It is ON all day, but not watched. They do not tend to gravitate to their room because they know the tv is and will always be there. I have a 5, 7, and 9 year old that do NOT have a tv in their room. They are in school and I would not want them to sneak to watch it when they should be sleeping or doing their homework.
I do have to say a few things. Their TV is set up so that there are only 5 channels I believe that they are allowed to watch. There is no way they can turn the channels or see anything inappropriate. And just because it is a cartoon doesn't mean it is appropropriate.
All of my girls had a TV at that young of ages. My oldest is AB honor roll. My second grader is the only A honor roll in her class and has been tested for gifted. She is in the top reading group for her class also. My kindergartener is the top student in her class. Could read before she even got to kindergarten and she did NOT even go to preschool(other than a very short summer program).
Her teacher told me that this class is by far the smartest of any of her past classes. I asked her why she thought that and she said it is the quality of the tv cartoons now. Dora teaches spanish. Great big book of everything teaches kids all types of things. My 2 year old now can count to ten in spanish and even says different words.
People don't seem to understand that the type of cartoons my generation had were the smurfs, snorks, strawberry shortcake. Absolutely nothing of merit.
So, yes my kids have a TV in their room and when my year old finally gets into a toddler bed she will also have a TV in her room also.

I believe that children should not have a TV in their room at any age. The same goes for a computer and/or a video game system. Several reasons:
- Kids withdraw from family when they can retreat to their room and watch TV, play video games, etc if they don't feel like spending time with them. There's really no reason for them to spend time with their parents and siblings other than during meals.
- They can watch anything with no adult supervision and the older they get the more inappropriate material is most likely to attract their attention.
- Unless children watch educational programs or programs with a deeper message than "destroy the enemy" or "my lip gloss is so-o cool" (and how many of them do really?) tv promotes inertness of the mind. Kids should receive maximum intellectual stimulation while they're growing and their thinking develops, while they still learn quickly and easily and Cartoon Network or MTV are by far not the best examples of that.
- TV should be a priviledge, not a given.

I do not think that a child should have a t.v. in their room at all, but if you feel that your children are responsible enough to have one then I feel the age of 16 is appropriate.

Any age, I guess. I got a tv put in my room around fourteen or fifteen. With cable. I was just told to turn it off at 10:30 or 11 so I could get up for school in the morning. And I never watched Porn or anything. I pretty much watched Nick @ nite or VH1.
I still have my tv in my room, and I graduated with high honors. I rarely watch the tv in my bedroom now. It was just there, because when I was younger, I had to have the tv or music on to get me to sleep faster.
All this stuff that television in the room makes kids do bad in school and become lazy kids who don't spend time with their family... I am proof that it is not like that all of the time. I spent a lot of time with my family and friends. I was gone basically every weekend to spend the night at someone's house. A tv in my room wasn't my whole life.

hm.. I shared a room with my sister and had a TV since fifth grade, I believe. But I really don't think that children should have a TV in their room if they spend a lot of time there because then they miss out on the real things in life, if you know what I mean. Too much time is spent in front of the TV..if they are to have a tv in their room, then there should be a limit as to when they are allowed to watch it :).

I've always had a tv in my room, even when I was younger although my parents kept me active and made me do things so I never really watched it. I have a tv in my room and I'm 15. I hate tv though so I dont watch it. It was a waste of money for my parents.

We have had a TV in our kid's room for each of them since they were less then a year old. They were the kind of kids that always had to have noise or they would wake up when it was quite. So we bought a TV with a VCR in it, so that it would play their favorite shows on repeat. My son still has that at age of 4, but now with a DVD player. My daughter, at age 9, has satellite in her room, but with blocked channels on Cinamax, HBO and those channels.

any age really I had my first tv in my room when I was 3. I hated watching in there because it was tiny compared to the one in the living room. As far as not putting one in there because you want to monitor what they watch , I'm sorry but what are you so scraed of TV today is so blan they do not allow anythign bad and even bad channels can be simply blocked with the remote. I still ahve a tv in my room and sometimes I wish I didn';t cause my mom likes to watch in my room so that kinda sucks but ya any age is appropriate.

Never. I don't think children should be allowed a tv in their room as that encourages them to stay in there. I think tv should be family time and also then you would be able to monitor what they watch and how long they watch. Plus if they are being punished and sent to their room, now how much punishment is that if they have a tv in there?
Anyways, just my opinion. Merry Christmas :)
